Position: Manager of Finance

The Union of British Columbia Performers (UBCP/ACTRA) is an autonomous branch of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 28,000 members across Canada.

UBCP/ACTRA is seeking a Manager of Finance to join our team.

This position requires a strategic and consultative partner of the UBCP/ACTRA Management Team, who leads the finance department and oversees treasury, accounting, audits, taxation, and all other financial activities of the Union.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the recruitment, management, and supervision of staff in the Finance Department including coaching, employee development, annual performance reviews and discipline up to termination when appropriate, in accordance with the Unifor Collective Agreement.
  • Oversee the treasury and accounting functions which includes investments, the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, insurance and retirement transfers and residuals payment processing.
  • Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinate activities with outside audit firms
  • Prepares the annual operating budget for approval at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
  • Provide financial support on all finance activities related to employee benefits, retirement plans, corporate insurance and related activities.
  • Coordinate, analyze, develop and report financial and residual results to the Members (annually), Board and Management on a monthly and as needed basis.
  • Research and prepare short and long-term financial forecasts to support corporate decisions and financial planning.
  • Supports the Executive Administrative Director (EAD) with the development and attainment of the organization's Strategic Priorities.
  • Support the EAD with stewardship of all the financial operations of the Union with a focus on preservation of Member funds.
  • Support the EAD in developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures for staff, management and the Executive Board.
  • Ensure legislative timelines are adhered to concerning the preservation of financial records.
  • Establish internal financial controls and oversee all internal control procedures.
  • Maintain proficiency in all aspects of corporate accounting and all pertinent GAAP rules, regulations, legislation and collective agreement provisions.
  • Ensure organization's adherence to financial laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Communicate with outside financial entities on behalf of the organization (brokers, bankers, insurance providers, CRA).
  • Manage the acquisition and disposal of capital assets.
  • Supports the EAD with the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments.
  • Provides guidance and support to the team on the financial aspects of the various collective agreements, in consultation with the Director of Contracts.
  • Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Participates in bargaining the Unifor Collective Agreement.
  • Attend and present reports at Membership Meetings.
  • Participates in Membership Committees as necessary.
  • Serve as a member of the Management team and attend weekly meetings.
  • Liaises with Legal Counsel in consultation with the EAD.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-secondary education in accounting and/or finance is required.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is required.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in financial management roles.
  • 3 - 5 years of supervisory experience with strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills.
  • Knowledge of non-profit financial management and standards would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Must have experience building external relationships across internal teams and with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience understanding collective agreements is desired.
