Main Purpose of Job:
Works with cross-functional teams as well as on independent projects to implement new product designs & modifications for current equipment to improve quality, cost, usability, and overall customer value.
The design engineer takes care of the total system as well as inner workings/engineering of a design
Design Engineer Job Description:
- Consults with employees regarding engineering problems with existing tooling.
- Designs machinery, parts, assemblies and components for equipment.
- Creates and updates detailed drawings and assemblies required for manufacturing using the company's CAD system.
- Interacts with assembly line, machine shop, service department and testing laboratory.
- Recommends design of new tools and engineering changes on existing tools; recommends purchase of equipment and materials as necessary.
- Designs and implements testing programs to evaluate the effectiveness of parts, assembles, machines or systems in house and by traveling to customers sites.
- Works with a team of engineers and designers to develop the conceptual, preliminary and detail design and the most critical parts.
- May work with industrial designers and marketing to develop the product concept and specifications; may direct the design effort from that point.
- Initiates design of preliminary and production prints according to customer specifications.
- Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and CAD programming to develop mold configurations.
- Designs final prints to meet customers' requirements.
- Maintains engineering procedures including job log on a daily basis to ensure that changes and correct prints are recorded and approved at the proper levels.
- Recommends changes to design specifications to improve integrity of the mold design.
- Purchases necessary materials from suppliers within company guidelines.
- Designs with concerns for manufacturability; processes include sheet metal fabrication, machining, rapid prototyping, molding and stamping.
- Provides technical product support to manufacturing, marketing and sales.
- Makes prototype models of product, functional "alpha" prototypes are used for testing and the non-functional are used for form and fit checking. To identify and correct design flaws, and develop tooling, manufacturing fixtures, and packaging.
- Develops "beta" pre-production prototype working with a manufacturing engineer and a quality engineer to review initial run of components and assemblies for design compliance and fabrication/manufacturing methods analysis.
- May follow the product and make requested changes and corrections throughout the life of the product. This is referred to as "cradle to grave" engineering.
Design Engineer Qualifications:
- 2-4 years shop experience, special machining and CAD experience required
- 5+ years of relevant experience in an Engineering position
- Experience with 2D CAD and solid modeling (Pro-E) software
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Able to analyze and synthesize complex concepts in technology and scientific systems; strong cognitive abilities; excellent problem-solving skills
- Strong collaboration and project management skills
- High level of verbal and written communication skills
