Primary Location: Onboard MV Isabelle, alongside

Employee Status: Contract

Salary Range (hourly): $41.03 to $51.03

The Opportunity

The Second Officer is a vital role responsible for supporting the navigation, safety, and operational activities of the floatel alongside in Canada. Working closely with the Chief Officer and other crew members, the Second Officer assists in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the floatel and delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Vessel Navigation and Operations:

  • Assist the Chief Officer in the overall navigation, maneuvering, and berthing of the floatel.
  • Maintain navigational charts, publications, and equipment in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Assist in planning and executing safe and efficient routes for the floatel if required.
  • Monitor weather conditions, tide levels, and other factors that may impact vessel operations.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness:

  • Assist in implementing and enforcing safety procedures and regulations on the floatel.
  • Conduct regular safety drills and training sessions for crew members.
  • Monitor safety equipment, life-saving appliances, and firefighting systems for proper functioning.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of guests and crew.

Guest Services:

  • Collaborate with the hotel management team to provide exceptional guest experiences.
  • Assist guests with inquiries, requests, and concerns, ensuring their satisfaction.
  • Participate in guest activities and events to enhance their onboard experience.
  • Provide support to other departments, as needed, to maintain smooth operations and guest satisfaction.

Crew Supervision and Training:

  • Assist in supervising and managing the crew, ensuring their adherence to standards and procedures.
  • Conduct training sessions for crew members on safety, emergency procedures, and guest services.
  • Foster a positive work environment, promoting teamwork and professionalism.
  • Support the Chief Officer in evaluating crew performance and providing feedback.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports related to vessel operations and safety.
  • Prepare incident reports, navigational logs, and other necessary documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for reporting and record-keeping.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of previous experience as a second officer or in a similar role within the maritime industry, preferably onboard a cruise ship or other passenger vessel
  • STCW Reg. II/1, officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more
  • Officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more
  • STCW Reg. IV/2 GMDSS radio operator
  • STCW Reg. VI/1 safety familiarization, basic training and instruction for all seafarers
  • STCW Reg. VI/2 proficiency in survival craft, rescue boats and fast rescue boats
  • STCW Reg. VI/3 advanced fire fighting
  • STCW Reg. VI/4 competence in medical first aid
  • STCW Reg. VI/6 security-related training and instruction for all seafarers
  • STCW Crisis management and human behaviour training
  • STCW Crowd management training
  • STCW Special training for Ro/Ro Passengers ships
  • STCW ECDIS generic training
  • STCW Reg. I/14 ECDIS type-specific familiarization training
  • Microsoft Office knowledge
  • Proficiency in computer systems and software used for vessel operations and navigation.
  • Excellent comprehension and command of the English language; (written & verbal).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with guests and crew members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
  • Ability to clear a drug and alcohol test prior to hiring and potential random tests throughout employment with prior notice.

Working Conditions

  • Repetitive, physical activity involved (walking, kneeling, reaching, lifting)
  • Lifting light to medium weight (up to 20 too 50lbs)
  • Exposure to environmental elements including extreme weather conditions.
