DUTIES:
Reporting to a Public Service Manager or designate, this position will require the successful candidate to interact and provide instruction to adults who have developmental disabilities in basic reading, writing, numeracy and computer skills. The incumbent will become familiar with literacy resources, particularly with high-interest, low-level materials. With the support of the Adult Literacy staff, you will be required to plan and facilitate the learning of small groups in basic Level 1 and 2 of the International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS). Will be responsible for developing learning materials and learner plans as required to meet individual needs of participants. Responsible for the maintenance of attendance records, both print and electronic, perform individual evaluations of progress on a regular basis, and refer learners to appropriate community support programs. Will be required to initiate and complete tasks with minimal supervision. Duties associated with this position may be subject to change in meeting the present and future needs of the Windsor Public Library. The Adult Literacy Instructor will demonstrate the highest standard of ethical conduct and confidentiality. Performs Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health & Safety Program. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have a university degree in the Social Sciences field, preferably in the field of Education or Disability Studies or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of one (1) year experience teaching small groups and one-to-one as needed;
• Must have knowledge and an understanding of issues affecting persons with developmental disabilities;
• Must have knowledge of the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework used in Literacy and Basic Skills programs funded by the Ministry of Advanced Educations and Skills Development;
• Must have knowledge and understanding of literacy issues;
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Must have excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills;
• Must have demonstrable technology proficiency in areas such as MS Office Suite of Products, educational applications, Internet, tablets, SMART Board;
• Must demonstrate flexibility to adapt curriculum to meet individual needs;
• Preference will be given to those who have experience in adult literacy training.
• Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities will be considered an asset.
• Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current, valid and lawful Driver's License is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver's abstract as a condition of employment;
• A Physical Demands analysis will be completed with the incumbent after approximately six months of occupying the position.
