Position Purpose

The Planning Student is responsible for general assistance to the Development Planning Division, including but not limited to the planning application process, preparing background research and analysis, along with conducting site plan compliance site visits. This role is also responsible for general office duties such as answering phones, email, filing, record keeping and counter inquiries related to general planning matters. Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in planning, geography, environmental studies, planning technology, geographic information systems, or related field.
  • Class G2 driver's license in good standing with access to a reliable vehicle for Town use;
  • MTO Issued Drivers Abstract, deemed as satisfactory by the Town;
  • Proficiency in a computerized environment, operating systems, database software; Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point.
  • Superior interpersonal, customer service and communication skills, both oral and written;

Position Summary

The Planning Student is responsible for general assistance to the Development Planning Division, including but not limited to the planning application process, preparing background research and analysis, along with conducting site plan compliance site visits. This role is also responsible for general office duties such as answering phones, email, filing, record keeping and counter inquiries related to general planning matters.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Development Planning Division staff with the acceptance, review and processing of Committee of Adjustment applications (Consent and Minor Variance) and Planning Applications (Subdivision/Condominium, Official Plan Amendment, Zoning By-law Amendment, Part Lot Control, Deeming, and Pre-Consultation);
  • Conducting research and analysis to inform the preparation of updates to various municipal by-laws and planning policy documents;
  • Provide administrative assistance to technical and support staff with records management, data creation, and records retention;
  • This position may be required to conduct site visits to obtain photos in order to support the Planning reports;
  • Respond to planning inquiries through consultation with staff;
  • Must work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and demonstrate commitment to performing safe work practices. Must work in compliance with applicable legislation, department policies/procedures/practices, and operational guidelines.
  • Carrying out special projects and other duties as assigned by the Manager of Development Planning or Designate;

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in planning, geography, environmental studies, planning technology, geographic information systems, or related field.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Understanding of local government, provincial land use policy and legislation and knowledge of the development application review process;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in a computerized environment, operating systems, database software; Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point.
  • Superior interpersonal, customer service and communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Effective time management and problem solving skills;
  • Strong research and analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment;

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Normal office conditions, may be seated for long periods;
  • Normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, as required. Evening or weekend hours occasionally;
  • Class G2 driver's license in good standing with access to a reliable vehicle for Town use;
  • MTO Issued Drivers Abstract, deemed as satisfactory by the Town;
