HOURS/WEEK: 35 hours per week

The SEED's mission: to run programs and social enterprises that increase physical and financial access to nutritious food among people facing food insecurity.

Brief Description:

The SEED is a community food project of the Guelph Community Health Centre. About 16% of households in Guelph are food insecure (Guelph Wellbeing study, 2014). The SEED's goal is to change that by offering programs and services that tackle the root causes of poverty. We are supported by hundreds of amazing community members and by many partner organizations.

We are seeking a youth between the ages of 18-30 to support the SEED team as a community garden assistant

Eligibility requirements

This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs fund. In order to be considered for this job you must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment contract;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment (student visas do not qualify); and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Basic Responsibilities:

Youth in this role will work as part of the Seed team in the community garden as an assistant.

  • participating in daily activities, including office and site work
  • help to coordinate project activities like gardener's registration, filling water tanks, composting, watering, weeding, etc.
  • Assist in garden activities, especially for those using wheelchairs and kitchen plots
  • prepare garden tools, set up and tear down for daily activities and events
  • keep garden areas clean and neat
  • greet visiting community members and provide assistance as needed
  • Provide assistance for Shelldale Farm Park and Kitchen Programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Interest in learning to grow food and food cycle
  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health and health equity
  • Interest in working outdoors and with volunteers and community members
  • Ability to multitask
  • Work well as part of a team
