Hybrid Work Model

For team members situated within 50 kms/31 miles of our five global offices in Ottawa, Eldoret, Penang, Columbus, and Amsterdam, you can expect to come into the office one day a week. Similarly, those near our co-working spaces in Nairobi and Toronto are encouraged to work onsite once a month.

Job Description

The Staff Software Developer, Security, is a highly skilled and experienced professional recognized as a leader in the domain of software security. This individual possesses a deep understanding of various security subjects including authentication, authorization and identity governance. This function is the first to jump on production incidents and help coordinate a response or remediation with other developers, regardless of team. In this role, you will actively collaborate with engineering teams, providing expertise in designing and reviewing technical solutions to address security weaknesses.

As an ambassador for the engineering team, you will lead by example, showcasing our security practices and innovations in various forums, from internal meetings to industry conferences, and through thought leadership such as writing and speaking engagements. This role is pivotal in maintaining the integrity and security of our products, and ensuring that Assent continues to lead the way in secure software development.

Key Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop a high quality, scalable and secure product that delivers valuable outcomes for our customers;
  • Own the technical and security related quality of a product or product line from inception to development to sustainment;
  • Collaborate with engineering teams by designing and reviewing technical solutions that address security weaknesses;
  • Collaborate with engineers and leadership to identify and address security risks and provide mitigation recommendations within the Secure Development Lifecycle (SDLC);
  • Collaborate with Product Management, User Experience, and Quality Assurance to understand customer pain points that the product resolves;
  • Guide other developers to solutions that are scalable, reliable, secure, and performant;
  • Identify, prioritize, and drive key technical and security challenges for the product to their resolution;
  • Participate in design and code reviews in alignment with Assent's secure coding standards;
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and methods and drive their adoption where they can accelerate achievment of the team's objectives;
  • Mentor other developers helping them to improve their technical and secure coding skills and overcome day-to-day problems;
  • Evangelize the great things that Assent's software developers do within and outside the company;
Qualifications

We strongly value your talent, energy and passion. It will also be valuable to Assent if you have the following qualifications,

  • 8+ years of experience in the software development field;
  • You are an expert in our software stack and deployment environment (C#/.NET, MS SQL Server, Angular, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes);
  • Demonstrable experience with API Security mechanisms (OAuth2, OIDC, SAML);
  • Expertise with an Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) platform, such as Auth0, Okta, or similar IdPs;

Strong Candidates will relate to the following:

  • You have a deep understanding into various security subjects related to authentication, authorization (RBAC, ABAC) and identity governance;
  • You have a depth of knownledge on application security and common web application vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10) and have experience with secure coding practices.
  • You care about the details and are not afraid to dig just a little deeper to understand a problem;
  • You are an expert in designing large-scale distributed systems. You can tell what patterns or techniques might apply to a situation, and can tell why they may be useful (or why not!);
  • You understand how to build, deploy, and observe software at scale;
  • You are an influencer who can work well with others and focuses on the merits of ideas;
  • You are a strong team player whose vision of the team extends beyond their reporting structure;
  • You are a critical thinker who can leverage powerful questions to make a point;

  • You are open to feedback, coachable and always striving to improve yourself.
