Join us to build a more rewarding financial future for all Canadians

At Neo, we’re on a mission to build a more rewarding financial future for all Canadians. Life at a rapidly scaling tech startup isn’t for everyone. It’s complex, fast-paced, high-pressure, but also incredibly fulfilling. Since its founding in 2019, Neo has gained incredible traction and is one of the fastest-growing fintech companies in Canada.

The Role

Are you a sharp, adaptable legal professional ready to make a profound impact on a hyper-growth tech scale-up? Neo is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our dynamic team in Calgary. This isn't your average in-house role. You'll be a pivotal force, navigating a vast and exhilarating landscape of legal challenges that span corporate, commercial, regulatory, employment, and privacy matters.

Our Legal team thrives on complexity, champions agility, and constantly seeks to make processes better, simpler, and stronger. You'll be empowered to drive transformative work, collaborating with some of Canada's most successful leaders and brightest tech minds to build products and technologies that truly change lives.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide practical, clear and accurate legal advice on a broad range of practice areas including commercial, corporate, regulatory, employment and privacy matters

  • Independently structure, draft, negotiate and review financing, partnership and customer-facing agreements, including identifying legal and business risks and collaborating with business and other lawyers on solutions to commercial and legal problems

  • Anticipate, elucidate and address legal issues to protect the interests of Neo and reduce exposure to legal risks

  • Draft internal policies and guidelines to ensure compliance with legal requirements

  • Support legal updates to all customer facing disclosures and agreements

  • Develop and implement processes for efficient and streamlined operations surrounding contract negotiation

  • Conduct legal research and provide concise and fit-for-purpose legal advice to internal stakeholders, in a timely manner

  • Manage external legal counsel, as required

Who we are looking for:

  • A sharp and adaptable lawyer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (L.LB) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) and 2-5 years of post-call experience

  • A mix of law firm and in-house experience, ideally within a regulated industry or start-up environment.

  • Commercial experience and a true generalist mentality, comfortable negotiating a variety of agreements such as 3rd party vendor contracts, NDAs, and consulting agreements

  • Experience working on a small team, fostering strong relationships, collaborating with business teams and taking ownership of your work.

  • Someone who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and tackle any task. You'll be a trusted partner to our business teams, providing practical, succinct, and solution-minded advice.

  • You have a strong sense of urgency, a hustle mentality, and a major attention to detail. You're also tech-savvy.

  • Comfortable and capable of managing multiple competing priorities - We are a fast-paced team that values strategic thinking and a sense of perspective.

  • The ideal candidate will be adaptable and maintain a positive attitude, focusing on the big picture without getting bogged down by minor details.
