Planning Engineer, River Engineering

As an experienced water resources or river engineer, you will apply and further develop your skills by leading and participating in a variety of projects supporting river flood resilience, asset management, infrastructure and development review and regulatory compliance and emergency response. Primary duties include:

• Lead design studies for flood management infrastructure.
• Manage assets for river and creek infrastructure, including inspections and condition assessments, reviewing records, establishing levels of service, and reporting.
• Review infrastructure designs and land development applications, assessing adherence to standards and sound engineering practice with respect to groundwater, hydrotechnical, erosion and channel stability, and environmental impacts.
• Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for Calgary's rivers and creeks, including frequency analyses, flow duration curves, and HEC-RAS modelling.
• Participate in the River Engineering Team's watershed monitoring and forecasting program, serving as a Forecaster-on-Duty on a rotating basis to monitor flood, drought, and ice-jam risks.
• Participate in flood emergency preparedness and response plans, tools, and exercises.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil or Water Resources Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience in hydrotechnical or water resources engineering obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. • Experience in hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modelling (HEC-RAS), and open channel infrastructure design is required.
• A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use OR the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit is required.
• A graduate degree in a related field is an asset.
• Experience in emergency management, flood response, or Asset Management for traditional and/or natural infrastructure is an asset.
• Familiarity with GIS / ArcGISPro is an asset.
• To succeed in this role, the candidate must have a proven initiative to tackle new tasks, a commitment to professional excellence, and strong communication and collaboration skills.

Working Conditions: Ability to work periodically on evenings or weekends for monitoring. Potentially long day or night shifts during an emergency response may be infrequently required. Pre-employment Requirements
