As a Technical Writer, you will support Water Treatment through the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical documentation, manuals, and training materials for treatment plants and secondary stations. Working closely with subject matter experts, you will ensure documentation supports operational consistency, workforce readiness, regulatory compliance, effective knowledge management, and safe, reliable operations. You will synthesize technical information from site observations, photos, diagrams, manuals, control narratives, and other source materials to produce clear, accurate, and accessible documentation. Primary duties include:

  • Create, review and update technical documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, usability, and compliance with regulatory, corporate, safety, and operational standards. Documents include SOPs, work instructions, manuals, checklists, reference documents, training materials, and other technical documentation.
  • Synthesize and organize technical information from subject matter experts, operators, engineers, technical drawings, process control narratives (PCNs) and occasional field verification to create technical documents that reflect current operating practices.
  • Collaborate with interested parties to document operational processes, procedural changes, equipment upgrades, capital projects, new technologies, and business improvement initiatives.
  • Create and revise forms in the Water Treatment forms catalogue.
  • Facilitate the creation and updating of internal online Water Treatment courses through external and internal vendors.
  • Update and maintain internal online documentation.
  • Review and maintain emergency response plans (ERPs), standards and best practices, codes of practice, and other critical environmental and safety-related documentation.
  • Support continuous improvement, documentation standardization, content modernization, backlog reduction, and regulatory readiness initiatives following City of Calgary standards and guidelines.

Qualifications

  • A completed diploma in Technical Writing, Business Administration, Information Design, or a related field, and at least 5 years of related experience.
  • A Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro is required.
  • A certification in Technical Writing from an accredited institution will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio and PolicyTech (or another document management system) would be considered an asset.
  • A thorough understanding of technical writing principles and advanced writing skills is essential.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, critical thinking, planning, and organizational skills.

Working Conditions: Visits to Water Treatment facilities with exposure to hazards (chemicals, noise, etc.).
