Building Mechanical Engineer

As the Building Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible to ensure safe, durable and efficiently operable City owned building mechanical infrastructure, including fire halls, recreation facilities, transit garages, park facilities, community associations, maintenance workshops, and office buildings. You will also perform thorough investigations, design reviews, and provide engineering advice on Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Plumbing Systems. Primary duties include:

• Provide design reviews and comments to City business units, project managers and consultants to ensure mechanical design meets the owner requirements with respect to system appropriateness, energy and water efficiency, maintainability, completeness, durability, and capital and life cycle costs.
• Assist with the maintenance and development of engineering design guidelines for City owned building infrastructure, including the evaluation and incorporation of best practices, new technologies, appropriate codes, and owner requirements with respect to building mechanical.
• Provide engineering advice on existing and new building mechanical infrastructure, to maintain, repair, and preserve City owned facilities managed by The City, civic partners, or community groups.
• Help business units manage facility condition assessments and lifecycle planning processes, including external consultant engagement and reviewing quality assurance reports.
• Collaborate with internal City departments and external consultants, including briefings, committees and project meetings as required.

Qualifications

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering, and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) and the use of a personal vehicle for business purposes.
• Experience in the design and construction of building mechanical infrastructure, preferably in a consulting engineering firm, is required.
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional designation will be considered an asset.
• Experience with planning and design of site civil infrastructure including stormwater management and site servicing will be considered an asset.
• Experience with building electrification and fuel switching will be considered an asset.
• Success in this position requires the following:
  • A strong ability to solve complex engineering issues in a professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively on technical and operational issues to various audiences with varying technical aptitude.
  • Excellent planning skills and have the ability to work as a member of a team in a collaborative environment while engaging internal and external interested parties.

• This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
