Overview

AtkinsRéalis Transmission, Distribution and Renewables division has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission substation design.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in the design and engineering of 500 kV and above transmission substations, including both Air‑Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas‑Insulated Substations (GIS). The individual will work as a senior technical resource within multidisciplinary project teams and will be responsible for delivering safe, reliable, and cost‑effective substation designs in accordance with applicable industry standards and client requirements.

This role provides an opportunity to contribute to major transmission infrastructure projects and support the development of high‑quality engineering solutions for the evolving North American electrical grid.

Your role
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the development of design packages from conceptual design through 60%, 90%, IFC, and construction support. Lead and perform Electrical Engineering and design for 115/230/500 kV and above transmission substations, including AIS and GIS installations.
  • Develop and review core electrical engineering deliverables, including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), electrical schematics, protection and control interfaces, and overall substation electrical arrangements.
  • Develop and review EHV substation layouts and equipment arrangements, including general arrangements, sections, elevations, bus configurations, electrical clearances, and interfaces for circuit breakers, disconnect switches, CTs, VTs, surge arresters, power transformers, shunt reactors, and other EHV equipment. Include GIS layouts, building interfaces, cable connections, and associated clearances.
  • Develop and review electrical infrastructure and auxiliary systems, including underground cable routing, conduits, cable trays, duct banks, switchgear, control/relay and telecommunications room layouts, AC auxiliary systems, load calculations, station service transformers, and associated electrical interfaces.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications and engineering documentation, including equipment specifications, data sheets, technical requirements, Bills of Material (BOMs), grounding and lightning protection requirements, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and project requirements.
  • Provide technical review, direction, and multidisciplinary coordination of engineering deliverables prepared by engineers and designers. Coordinate closely with Protection & Control, Civil, Structural, Telecommunications, Mechanical, and other disciplines to resolve technical interfaces, design conflicts, quality issues, and project requirements.
  • Engage with clients, utilities, vendors, and project stakeholders on technical matters and provide engineering support throughout procurement, vendor drawing reviews, factory testing, construction, and commissioning. Identify technical risks, design constraints, and opportunities for value engineering, optimization, cost reduction, and improved constructability.

About you
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university, with 8–12+ years of progressive experience in the electrical engineering and design of high‑voltage and extra‑high‑voltage transmission substations, including demonstrated experience with 500 kV and above projects.
  • Professional Qualification:Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada is required, with demonstrated ability to take technical ownership of electrical engineering activities.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong practical experience in the design of both AIS and GIS transmission substations, with comprehensive knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, CSA, IEC, and NERC requirements applicable to transmission substation design.
  • Utility & Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with Canadian utility standards and specifications, including Hydro One and major North American utilities, is an asset.
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong technical writing, communication, coordination, and problem‑solving skills, with demonstrated ability to lead technical design activities and work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
