Senior Backend Developer

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Our client is a rapidly growing enterprise sustainability platform that helps leading organizations automate measurement of their environmental impact and accelerate their transition to profitable climate action. With partnerships across major financial institutions and industry associations, they're building the data infrastructure that enables businesses to measure, forecast, and reduce their climate footprint at scale across North America.
Role Overview:
The ideal candidate will architect and develop the data systems and APIs that power environmental impact measurement, scenario forecasting, and sustainability analytics for hundreds of enterprise customers. This person will own the technical foundation that converts complex, inconsistent operational data into auditable, real-time sustainability insights—building with the rigor and precision required in financial-grade systems.
Key Responsibilities:
• Own end-to-end development of secure, scalable data pipelines that ingest, validate, and process sensitive operational data from enterprise customers
• Build and maintain high-performance backend services in Node.js/TypeScript and Python that power analytics, forecasting, and scenario modeling for sustainability metrics
• Design and implement database-driven systems using PostgreSQL that handle complex data aggregation, multi-tenant isolation, and audit trail requirements
• Architect real-time data processing workflows that support live calculations, anomaly detection, and client-facing dashboards with strict accuracy and security requirements
• Partner with the product and customer teams to translate business problems into scalable technical solutions
• Champion ownership of data integrity, system observability, and operational excellence—following financial system standards for security, idempotency, and compliance
• Improve developer experience and code quality across the backend stack through thoughtful patterns, documentation, and mentorship
• Actively contribute to product and architectural decisions with strong technical opinions backed by pragmatism
• Support customer-facing problem solving through well-designed APIs and self-serve technical solutions that empower autonomy

Must Have Skills:
• 5+ years of production backend development in Node.js and/or Python
• Strong proficiency with PostgreSQL and SQL optimization (query design, indexing, performance tuning)
• Experience designing and building data pipelines that handle high volume, complex transformations, and strict data accuracy requirements
• Proven ability to architect systems with security, scalability, and reliability at the core
• Comfort working in a startup environment with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and cross-functional collaboration
• Passion for building systems that create meaningful impact

Nice to Have Skills:
• Experience with financial systems, ledger-based architectures, or other compliance-heavy domains
• Background in data platform engineering, analytics systems, or time-series data processing
• Familiarity with GCP (Google Cloud Platform) or other cloud infrastructure
• Experience with asynchronous microservice architectures or event-driven systems
• Knowledge of carbon accounting, ESG, or environmental sustainability concepts
• Experience working with AI-assisted coding tools
• Track record of mentoring engineers and setting technical standards
