What You'll Do:We are seeking a motivated Process Engineering Co-op student to join our Joffre Nitrogen Operations team for a 12- or 16-month work term beginning May 2026. This temporary, full-time role is open to students who will be returning to school after the co-op term.
This position is site-based at Joffre, AB, approximately 30 minutes east of Red Deer, and is not eligible for remote work.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and technical services teams to support safe and efficient plant operations.
- Participate in process troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and engineering analysis for operational issues.
- Assist in developing and updating operating procedures, technical documentation, and engineering reports.
- Conduct field walkdowns to better understand process systems, operating conditions, and equipment performance.
- Support Process Safety Management (PSM) activities, including tracking and closing action items from Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and PSM audits.
- Assist with Management of Change (MOC) documentation and action items closure.
- Support review and maintenance of Process Safety Information (PSI) and participate in risk assessments and hazard reviews.
- Assist with pressure relief valve (PSV) contingency planning, including documentation and risk evaluations for out-of-service relief devices.
- Track and manage asset integrity and reliability action items related to inspections, equipment performance, and maintenance programs.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Currently enrolled and completed at least 2 years of an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering (or equivalent) required.
- Experience with reading and analyzing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID's) required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Experience with process simulation software, such as Aspen HYSYS is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and basic data analytics platforms.
- Ability to work safely in an industrial plant environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Developing understanding of chemical engineering, principles (thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, heat transfer, compression, refrigeration, and fluid dynamics).
- Exposure to Process Safety Management concepts and risk assessment methodologies.
- Familiarity with engineering documentation, data analysis, or process simulation tools.
- Familiarity with asset integrity, reliability engineering, and process safety.
