Build the foundation for a successful career in geotechnical engineering with a great team. When we say we’re full-service, we mean it. You’ll find us in the office, on site, and in the lab. We work in and outdoors, above and below ground, over and under water, on projects large and small. From field exploration and lab testing to designing and managing the construction of complex geotechnical structures, our team does rock-solid work.

Join our team and discover the opportunities that await.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mining Geotechnical and Tailings team in Markham, Ontario. • Develop geotechnical models and design parameters based on site investigation, laboratory, CPT and monitoring data.
  • Complete and review geotechnical analyses, including 2D and 3D slope stability, seepage, settlement, liquefaction, seismic and, where appropriate, stress-deformation assessments.
  • Support the design, assessment and construction of tailings storage facilities (TSFs), waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs), stockpiles, open pits, embankments, foundations, dams, water management structures and other mining infrastructure.
  • Contribute to PFS, FS, detailed design and construction-phase projects through preparation and review of design criteria, calculations, technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications and engineering recommendations.
  • Review and interpret instrumentation, monitoring and performance data and develop practical geotechnical recommendations.
  • Support operational geotechnical and tailings services, Engineer of Record (EoR) activities, dam safety inspections and reviews, and facility performance assessments.
  • Provide field engineering and construction support, including review of site conditions, earthworks, monitoring data, construction records and quality documentation.
  • Coordinate technical work assignments and project deliverables in collaboration with project managers, project directors and senior technical staff.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship and review of work completed by engineering graduates and junior staff.
  • Contribute to technical excellence, quality management, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the geotechnical and tailings practice.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support proposals, scope development, budgeting, work planning and business development activities.
  • Apply Stantec’s quality, health, safety and environmental procedures and contribute to practical, technically sound and defensible engineering solutions.

  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, geotechnical characterization and the behavior of earth structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and interpreting geotechnical investigations and developing geotechnical design parameters.
  • Strong experience with geotechnical analyses relevant to mining, tailings, dams and mine infrastructure, including slope stability and seepage; experience with liquefaction, seismic and deformation analyses is an asset.
  • Experience with the design or assessment of TSFs, mine waste facilities, stockpiles, open-pit slopes, dams or related mining infrastructure.
