Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Power System Studies Center of Excellence is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to be a Technical Lead in Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) PSCAD Power System Studies. The EMT PSCAD Technical Lead will oversee a team of engineers in the execution of EMT studies for various power systems including generation, transmission, and distribution levels, and with different types of generation including renewables and energy storage. The execution of EMT studies will also have an emphasis on the simulation and analysis of HVDC and other power electronic and inverter-based resource (IBR) systems. Besides managing and overseeing a strong technical team in the day-to-day delivery of studies, this position is also responsible for leading business development, client relations and technical proposal preparation in the area of EMT and other power system studies. The Technical Lead also plays a key role in helping set the strategic direction for the power system studies team by keeping up to date with current and emerging industry trends and directions in HVDC and IBR control and protection design and simulation including the participation in various IEEE and CIGRE working groups.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Projects for Clients- Provide direct project leadership on EMT power system studies projects. The work includes carrying out and providing guidance to the studies team on the following: developing study methodologies, preparing models and project study cases, analyzing simulation results, identifying system issues and possible mitigation strategies as well as preparing and reviewing study reports.

• Meeting with clients to report on project progress, interim and final study results.

• Participate in marketing and business development activities related to EMT studies, including development of proposal methodologies, staffing requirements, and labor estimates.

• Participate in IEEE, CIGRE, IEC or other technical organizations.

• Provide technical advice, guidance, and mentorship to technical team members.

• Provide input regarding technical training requirements and opportunities.

• Stay up to date on the latest simulation tools and techniques used within the industry.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Expert level of experience in EMT studies using PSCAD with strong background in static and dynamic modelling of HVDC converters, static var compensators, STATCOMS and other power electronic devices.

• Experience in other power system analysis software is considering an asset, including EMTP, PSSE, PSLF, ASPEN, ETAP, CYME, DSATools, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, etc.

• Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and verbal, with both technical and non-technical audiences .

• Understanding of North American power systems, associated standards and regulations such as NERC TPL standards.

• Experience with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.

Education and Experience

• MSc in Electrical Engineering or PhD in Electrical Engineering preferred.

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng and/or PE) is preferred.

• Minimum of 15 years of experience as an electrical engineer, with focus on EMT studies using PSCAD software for generation and transmission, renewable energy, battery storage, and HVDC and other power electronic and inverter-based resource (IBR) systems.
