Your Opportunity

Stantec is growing, and we're looking for an experienced Senior Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our Water team in Dartmouth, NS or St. John’s, NL. In this role, you'll help lead the electrical, instrumentation, and controls design for a variety of water and wastewater projects across Atlantic Canada. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you'll support critical infrastructure that helps communities improve, reuse, and protect water resources. Our team is regularly tasked with some of the most interesting projects in North America, including PLC/SCADA or DCS deployments up to 250,000 IO and controlling up to a billion litres/day of liquid treatment. We regularly design for and support the latest technologies including Thermal Hydrolysis, and Combined Heat and Power applications, and have a focus on growing our analytics team which are changing the way we approach water treatment.

Our team is deeply involved in shaping water infrastructure projects across Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada. Your Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team of design and engineering professionals to deliver water and wastewater projects for public and private sector clients. Primary duties will include leading electrical design and engineering activities across all phases of assigned projects, from planning through post-construction, while also supporting instrumentation, controls, automation, PLC/HMI/SCADA planning, process control strategies, construction support, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

The successful applicant is expected to apply mature engineering knowledge and professional judgment to plan, size, evaluate, select, and specify electrical, instrumentation, and control systems in accordance with relevant codes, standards, and industry best practices. This role will include the following responsibilities:

Leadership and project delivery activities, including:

  • Acting as electrical discipline lead on multidisciplinary water and wastewater projects.
  • Acting as technical lead and/or project manager on electrical, instrumentation, and controls projects.
  • Serving as a senior technical resource and task lead on large, complex, or technically specialized projects.
  • Acting as electrical engineer-of-record for projects and project components of varying complexity.
  • Developing and managing electrical and I&C scope, budgets, staffing plans, and schedules.
  • Conducting and/or overseeing field reviews to assess existing as-built conditions, equipment, control systems, control panels, and communication networks.
  • Leading the preparation of electrical and I&C studies, assessments, technical memorandums, reports, calculations, and planning documents.
  • Evaluating and selecting electrical products, instrumentation, control systems, and engineered systems for use on projects.
  • Leading the preparation and coordination of construction drawings, including single line diagrams, power and lighting plans, grounding and lightning protection plans, elevations, wiring diagrams, motor control schematics, riser diagrams, installation details, panel schedules, cable schedules, P&IDs, communication network architecture diagrams, control panel details, CCTV and access control drawings, and instrument installation details.
  • Leading the development of technical specifications, equipment and instrument datasheets, detailed control strategies and narratives, testing and commissioning plans, and construction packages.
  • Coordinating electrical and I&C technical specifications and drawings with construction documents and other disciplines, including process, mechanical, civil, and structural teams.
  • Leading modeling, study, and analysis of power systems, including load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and motor acceleration studies.
  • Supporting PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS planning, design, programming, upgrades, automation design, and process control strategy development.
  • Providing guidance, training, and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers, designers, and technologists.
  • Leading project coordination meetings with internal team members, external consultants, owners, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Participating in client requirement meetings, value analysis, constructability reviews, technical presentations, and cost estimating.
  • Conducting quality assurance reviews, implementing quality control frameworks, and completing technical reviews of deliverables prepared by peers and junior staff.
  • Assisting in the development of new standards and specifications for the electrical and I&C groups.
  • Overseeing and managing multiple projects concurrently.

Construction support activities, including:

  • Responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and evaluating contractor and supplier submittals.
  • Conducting and/or overseeing construction site inspections and field reviews for conformance with design.
  • Supporting equipment, electrical systems, control systems, commissioning, start-up, performance testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Monitoring construction progress and supporting issue resolution with owners, contractors, and project teams.

Business development and marketing support activities would be considered an asset, including:

  • Supporting project pursuit strategies and proposal development.
  • Developing presentation materials and participating in client presentations and interviews.
  • Contributing technical input to business development activities and client relationship development.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert for electrical, instrumentation, and controls disciplines.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of industry standards, electrical codes, building codes, and relevant water/wastewater design standards.
  • Advanced understanding of electrical engineering concepts with the ability to effectively communicate technical ideas to clients, project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications, particularly in the water/wastewater industry.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, controls, automation, construction means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead one or more teams through all phases of project delivery.
  • Ability to effectively review the work of others for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to manage time, budgets, schedules, and competing priorities across multiple projects.
  • Collaboration skills with the ability to participate in multidisciplinary project teams and engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including technical writing for reports, memorandums, specifications, and client-facing deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Autodesk products, including AutoCAD and Revit. Familiarity with Bentley products, including MicroStation, is considered an asset.
  • Experience with specialized power system software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, and/or EasyPower is a significant asset. Advanced knowledge of associated power system studies is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the desire and ability to provide coaching and mentorship to junior and intermediate staff.
  • Project management experience, particularly in the municipal water/wastewater sector, is considered a significant asset.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology is required.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada or Civil Engineering Technologist is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of consulting experience supporting water and wastewater infrastructure projects is required.
  • Experience leading electrical, instrumentation, controls, automation, PLC/HMI/SCADA, and commissioning-related work on municipal water/wastewater projects is strongly preferred.
