GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reporting to the Director or Site Manager of Medical Physics, the Medical Dosimetrist is responsible for the preparation of accurate computer treatment plans for patients receiving radiation therapy and for calculating radiation doses. Clinical knowledge includes, but is not limited to, anatomy and physiology; radiation biology and oncology; radiation safety and protection; mathematics; and radiation therapy physics, technology, and techniques. The Medical Dosimetrist is expected to work collaboratively with the radiation oncologist and medical physicist during the treatment planning process and participates in communicating the treatment plan to the radiation therapist for implementation. The Medical Dosimetrist has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology in the management of cancer or other disease processes, with special expertise in radiation therapy treatment planning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• Bachelor/Diploma in Radiation Therapy
• Canadian Dosimetry Certificate (CDC)* or Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD)*
• Certification for Basic Life Saver (BLS)-C
• Applicants that do not have, CDC or CMD will be required to obtain Certification within 5 years of the start date.

Experience:

• Three (3) years previous experience as a qualified Radiation Therapist

Memberships:

• Licensed - College of Medical Radiation Imaging Professionals of Saskatchewan (CMRIPS)
• Membership - Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT)

Skills:

• Expertise in the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics to develop optimal treatment plans.
• Expert working knowledge of radiation oncology treatment planning and delivery techniques and related equipment.
• Knowledgeable in the areas of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
• Knowledgeable in health care informatics - including the resources, devices, and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data.
• Displays mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry, and introductory calculus.
• Competence in the use of basic office software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, WebEx, and Outlook.
• Competence in the use of clinical guidelines and ensures correct implementation.
• Possess good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the exchange of information with patients, family members, and the radiation oncology treatment team as well as outside entities.
• Demonstrates high level critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to include the ability to make timely clinical decisions.
• Works independently, but in collaboration with the radiation oncologist, medical physicist and others.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in various stages of completion according to priorities.
• Ability to work under time pressures to meet deadlines and handle interruptions and changing priorities.
• Human relations skills required to ensure compliance and promote acceptance through negotiating with staff where there is a requirement to resolve a conflict or situation.
• Accuracy of fine motor movement is required to perform detailed outlining of anatomical structures using the computer mouse.
• Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
