Experience
- Minimum two (2) years experience working as an Infection Control Practitioner
Education
- Degree in Nursing or other relevant Health Sciences Degree (related to infection prevention and control) acceptable to the Employer.
- Current Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC).
Licenses
- Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s license.
Competencies
- Provide subject matter expertise in infection prevention and control during the planning, design, and construction phases of hospital and healthcare facility projects.
- Review and interpret design drawings, specifications, and construction plans to ensure alignment with IPAC requirements, CSA standards, CSA Z317 series, FGI guidelines, and local/provincial legislation.
- Recommend design strategies to minimize infection risks (e.g., ventilation, patient flow, hand hygiene accessibility, finishes, isolation capacity, water safety, emerging technologies).
- Participates as an active member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) from the planning stage to the final evaluation after completion of the work to ensure infection prevention and control standards are incorporated and adhered to.
- Lead infection control risk assessments for new construction and renovation projects.
- Monitor and advise on infection control measures during construction and commissioning.
- Primary IPAC contact for all major capital projects in the SHA and will advise on permits, design consults, etc., based on CSA approved standards and guidelines in construction, renovation and maintenance.
- Provide IPAC related recommendations and requirements regarding procurement of products, equipment and supplies related to the projects.
- Establishes guidelines in collaboration with the MDT for all facility staff pertaining to construction related concerns such as traffic control and environmental cleaning procedures.
- Provide education and training to project teams, contractors, and hospital staff on infection prevention during construction.
- Stay current with emerging trends in infection prevention, facility design, and evidence-based healthcare planning.
- Act as a resource and mentor for IPAC colleagues involved in design and construction consultation.
- Partner with clinical operations, facilities management, environmental services, and contractors to embed IPAC best practices throughout the project lifecycle.
- Facilitate workshops and provide IPAC input in user group meetings and design reviews.
- Translate complex infection prevention requirements into practical, implementable design solutions.
- Ensures through education that staff members are aware of the risks for patients during construction and assist staff to respond with appropriate measures and teaching for patients and families.
- Monitors compliance of patients, staff and visitors with infection prevention and control standards and procedures during construction/renovation/maintenance/design including routine practices and additional precautions.
- Develops and implements standards and procedures relating to infection prevention and control in relation to construction/ renovation/maintenance/design for review and approval by the Provincial IPAC Operations Committee.
- Participates in the IPAC team to maintain and advance a provincial Infection Prevention and Control program, ensuring that activities are client-centered, performed in a manner consistent with other IPAC team members and in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Assists with the provision of related training and expert consultation within the parameters of the SHA’s mission and vision.
- Collaborates in the development of educational tools, policies and procedures related to the program and based on current standards, guidelines or reference material.
- Prepares and delivers training/education to various groups in the SHA, including clients, families, staff, physicians, and students on topics related to IPAC,
- Promotes the integration of infection prevention principles into design of new construction or renovation projects in the SHA.
- Provides expert consultative services regarding IPAC to staff in various departments and settings, and to colleagues within and outside the SHA with input from other IPAC program staff. Consistent messaging within the team is crucial.
- Identifies risk management issues and influences corrective action in collaboration with affected departments.
- Conducts environmental audits related to infection control, recommends improvements based on research or current standards and shares findings in a timely way.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with team members, care providers and community agencies through participation on the provincial IPAC Operations Committee, and by collaborating with staff in various departments on matters affecting these services.
- Participates on quality improvement teams or research projects when designated by the IPAC team.
- Maintains and enhances personal and professional growth by continuing to build on current knowledge and through participation in professional associations.
- Must concentrate to maintain accurate control over and analyze patient data elements, develop education resources, policies and procedures. Concentration is required for periods of time. Daily tasks are subject to considerable variability. There is pressure to perform duties accurately and efficiently within a prescribed period of time.

- Knowledge of relevant CSA standards and their application to infection control during construction, maintenance, and renovation activities in healthcare facilities, including the ability to assess environments and evaluate preventive measures.
- Ability to assess Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRAs) and related controls, ensuring current measures are in place to protect patients, staff, and visitors throughout all phases of construction activities.
- Demonstrated skill in translating standards into practice, including collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and supporting effective implementation and compliance during construction activities.
- Demonstrated computer skills, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and current surveillance software.
- Physical ability to perform tasks and duties associated with position.
