Critical Control Technologies is seeking an experienced Payroll Consultant to provide coaching, mentorship, and subject matter expertise to support the development of a new Payroll Administrator.
This is a part-time consulting opportunity requiring approximately 3 hours per week (1 hour, 3 times per week). The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in Canadian and US payroll, employee benefits administration, and UKG/Ultipro, along with a passion for developing others.
About the RoleThis role is not intended to be a hands-on payroll processing position. Instead, the consultant will act as a trusted advisor, trainer, and mentor to help build internal payroll knowledge, confidence, and capability.
The consultant will work closely with the Payroll Administrator and leadership team to provide guidance, answer questions, review processes, identify risks, and support best practices in payroll and benefits administration.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to a Payroll Administrator
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Canadian and US payroll legislation, compliance, and best practices
  • Provide guidance on multi-state US payroll requirements and Canadian payroll regulations
  • Support knowledge transfer related to payroll processing, remittances, year-end reporting, and payroll compliance
  • Review payroll processes and recommend improvements for efficiency, accuracy, and risk reduction
  • Provide expertise on Canadian and US employee benefit programs and administration
  • Offer guidance on payroll-related employee questions, deductions, garnishments, taxable benefits, and payroll changes
  • Support troubleshooting and optimization within UKG/Ultipro
  • Assist leadership with payroll-related projects, audits, or complex situations as needed
  • Help develop documentation, procedures, and training resources to support long-term internal capability

QualificationsRequired Experience
  • Extensive experience administering Canadian and US payroll
  • UKG/Ultipro expert level experience
  • Strong working knowledge of multi-state US payroll requirements
  • Experience with Canadian and US employee benefits administration
  • Experience supporting payroll compliance, audits, remittances, and year-end processes
  • Previous experience training, mentoring, or developing payroll professionals

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting international or multi-jurisdiction payroll environments
  • Experience working with both HR and Finance teams
  • Payroll certifications considered an asset

Engagement Details
  • Contract consulting arrangement
  • Approximately 1 hour, 3 times per week
  • Flexible scheduling based on mutually agreed-upon availability
  • Competitive hourly consulting rate based on experience
