The Opportunity

The Director & Team Lead leads a team of Relationship Managers to drive profitable growth, deliver exceptional client service, and manage risk across a portfolio of strategic clients. The role is accountable for business development, portfolio growth, and client retention, while fostering a high-performance team culture.

As a trusted advisor and leader, the Director & Team Lead drives revenue growth through relationship expansion, cross-selling, and complex financing solutions, while serving as the primary escalation point for complex client matters and ensuring alignment with the Bank's strategic objectives, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.

What You’ll Do

Strategic Leadership & Business Growth

  • Drive market growth through targeted client acquisition, expansion, and retention strategies.
  • Lead Relationship Managers to grow strategic client portfolios and deepen market penetration.
  • Execute portfolio growth plans to achieve revenue, profitability, and client development objectives.
  • Identify market trends, client needs, and competitive opportunities to inform business strategy.
  • Collaborate across business lines to deliver integrated client solutions and maximize revenue opportunities.

Client Relationship Management

  • Grow and manage a portfolio of middle market clients by developing trusted advisory relationships with business owners, executives, and key decision-makers.
  • Drive new business acquisition through proactive prospecting, networking, and referrals while expanding existing client relationships through strategic cross-selling opportunities.
  • Build and maintain executive-level relationships with key clients and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on financing, capital structure, and growth strategies.
  • Drive new business acquisition through proactive prospecting, networking, and referrals while expanding existing client relationships through strategic cross-selling opportunities.
  • Resolve complex client issues and drive high levels of client satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Oversee strategic client portfolios to optimize retention, profitability, and long-term value.
  • Coach teams to strengthen client engagement and deepen relationships.

Deal Leadership & Credit Management

  • Lead the structuring, negotiation, and execution of complex lending and financing transactions.
  • Guide credit approval strategies to balance growth, profitability, and risk.
  • Partner with Credit, Risk, Legal, Product, and Operations teams to deliver financing solutions.
  • Ensure transaction pricing and structures align with risk and return objectives.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Build, lead, and develop high-performing teams through coaching and mentorship.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and accountability-driven culture.
  • Set clear performance expectations and support employee development and career growth.
  • Attract, retain, and develop top talent to meet current and future business needs.
  • Recognize achievement and address performance gaps through effective coaching.

Risk Management & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, and risk frameworks.
  • Promote sound risk management practices that support sustainable business growth.
  • Monitor portfolio quality and implement strategies to mitigate emerging risks.
  • Maintain effective governance and controls across portfolio and client activities.

Strategic Influence & Stakeholder Management

  • Partner with senior leaders and stakeholders to align strategy and drive business results.
  • Represent the Bank with clients, industry groups, and external stakeholders.
  • Provide insights on portfolio performance, market trends, and strategic priorities.
  • Advise leadership on market opportunities, client strategies, and portfolio growth.

Qualifications

  • 7-10+ years of progressive experience in Corporate Banking, Commercial Banking, Relationship Management, Account Management, Portfolio Management, or a related financial services environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
  • Proven track record of business development, revenue generation, portfolio growth, and complex credit transaction management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline; equivalent experience considered.
  • Credit qualification and advanced credit expertise required where applicable.
  • Strong understanding of commercial and corporate banking products, risk management practices, pricing methodologies, and credit adjudication.

Salary:

$86,000.00 - $160,000.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
