Hiring Unit:User Services - Islamic Studies Library

Supervisor: Head, Islamic Studies Library

Hours of work: 21h (3 days) per week for 8 weeks (start date TBD)

Hourly Rate: $25

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the library, the student will be responsible for assessing the microfiches and microfilms collection housed in the Islamic Studies Library. Duties will include identifying individual titles, authors and original copies of the manuscripts reproduced, checking for duplicates (in any format) in the library catalogue, assessing if worth adding to the collection (in collaboration with Head librarian), and collating bibliographic information of materials identified as valuable in an excel spreadsheet.

Description:

  • Sort and order microfiches and microfilms

  • Identify titles, authors, and the origin of manuscripts reproduced

  • Check for duplication within the microfiches and microfilms collection as well as in the larger ISL collection in all formats

  • In consultation with Head Librarian, determine materials for discard and materials for integration to the collection

  • Provide bibliographical description of materials that will be added to the collection in a spreadsheet

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Knowledge of either Arabic, Persian or Urdu a requirement.

  • Some knowledge of the Islamic manuscripts culture and heritage literature an asset.

  • Proficiency with the Library catalogue.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to clearly transmit and receive information.

  • English: spoken, read and written. French: read.
