POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill University is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to lead and conduct a research project on ongoing battery recycling activities. The successful candidate's duties will involve laboratory research on the recycling and recovery of critical battery materials and contribute to applied research on hydrometallurgical processing, direct recycling, and upcycling of lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and conducts hydrometallurgical recycling experiments involving both pristine and spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

  • Leads the battery recycling research activities in the laboratory. This includes data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and reporting

  • Develop and conduct new recycling methods involving both pristine and spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

  • Provide support to graduate students conducting direct recycling and upcycling research projects

  • Provides functional supervision of Research Assistant(s), undergraduate and graduate research assistant(s) working on the research project, this includes data analysis, preparing reports, manuscripts, and presentations

  • Writes manuscripts for publication, presentations and progress reports

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or a closely related discipline.

  • Have at least five (5) years of research experience in fields of hydrometallurgical recycling experiments and lithium-ion battery cathode materials

  • Publications on related topics are an asset

  • Experience with hydrometallurgical laboratory procedures and equipment is essential.

  • Knowledge of hydrometallurgical processing, direct recycling, and upcycling of lithium-ion battery cathode materials is a requirement.

  • Ability to communicate scientific findings by oral presentation and written reports

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.

  • Excellent organizational and project coordination abilities.
