POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of Professor Sidney Omelon, the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to support research projects focused on sustainable materials and environmental process engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to 1) the characterization and processing of EV battery waste (black mass), including extraction of lithium iron phosphate or hydrated iron (III) phosphate; and 2) the development and scale-up of processes to reduce carbon dioxide in biogas using waste concrete and enhance phosphorus recovery.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The tasks of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and conducts research projects and protocols focused on the characterization of the material and chemical composition of EV battery waste black mass

  • Establishes the design and development of research methods to support lab-scale process development of lithium iron phosphate or iron (III) phosphate extraction from waste black mass

  • Plans and leads the development of experiments related to the development of lab-scale biogas production processes and associated systems

  • Develops and implements new methods of analysis or research to advance biogas treatment approaches, including reducing carbon dioxide concentration using waste concrete and improving phosphorus recovery

  • Leads the analysis and interpretation of research data and disseminates the results through reports, presentations, and other scholarly outputs

  • Writes theoretical or methodological reports, papers, or articles related to research activities, contributing to knowledge in materials recovery and process engineering

  • Prepares and writes grant applications to support ongoing research initiatives in sustainable materials and environmental technologies

  • Responsible for the quality and results of their own work and the work of those they oversee, ensuring rigor in laboratory research and process development activities

  • Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of research staff and participates in their training, including the supervision of undergraduate and graduate student lab work and general lab coordination

  • Trains and onboards new students to the research projects conducted by the lab, supporting knowledge transfer and research continuity

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of research experience in iron and phosphate chemistry, process development, and material characterization

  • Expertise in Spectroscopic and microscopic characterization techniques (XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman, SEM-EDS)

  • Experience with Wet lab experimentation and process scale-up

  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with complex datasets

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities with the ability to present complex research findings clearly to both academic and industry audiences.

  • Strong academic research writing skills, with experience preparing scientific reports and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities, especially in managing multiple experimental workflows and data sets.

  • Collaborative mindset and experience working in multidisciplinary research environments, with the ability to contribute to team-based projects and publications.
