Develop and implement optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. Recommend and implement improvements to production processes, methods and controls. Coordinate manufacturing launch for new or revised products or processes. Priorities include, process improvement, problem resolution, project management of Capex projects and employee training.

Will use appropriate continuous improvement tools and methodologies to analyze current plant and equipment layouts, fabrication methods, material flow and handling. Conduct research to recommend and implement improvements based on leading technology and engineering principles.

  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs, applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators;
  • Develop manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of product design performing research, design and development of manufacturing processes including production flow, assembly methods and production equipment;
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout resulting in cost reduction and quality improvement;
  • Knowledge of the "lean process" and the pursuit of value stream improvements;
  • Establish operational priorities and improve operational systems and procedures such as work instructions, Kanbans, 5S, etc.;
  • Partner with maintenance to ensure preventative maintenance is scheduled with production;
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, ergonomic standards and safety standards as required by Canam Group Inc and government regulations;
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labour, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements;
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends;
  • Lead capacity expansion including upgrades to existing facilities, new startups, and technology upgrade;
  • Lead capital project management by identifying problems, providing solutions, justifying capital, cost savings, and project management;
  • Issue monthly progress reports on project status, issues, schedules etc.;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, with concentration preferably in Mechanical or Industrial;
  • P.Eng preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in manufacturing engineering or a commensurate level of experience within the steel industry;
  • Previous experience with AutoCad and Solidworks software;
  • Previous design experience with the development of manufacturing processes, including production flow, assembly methods, and safety and production equipment is required;
  • Lean Six Sigma training (Black Belt) an asset ;
  • Previous exposure to roll forming manufacturing equipment an asset;
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Must have knowledge of computers, machining and assembly practices, tools and fixtures;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and make presentations;
  • Ability to work with internal as well as external customers;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a team;
  • Must excel at working in a team environment;
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills.

Additional Information

Physical Demands: The nature of this position may requires the employee to perform a wide range of physical activities, ranging from pushing and pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects (50-70 lb), to sitting, climbing, crouching, kneeling, bending and handling with repetitive hand and finger movements. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

Work Environment: The employee constantly works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to welding fumes and airborne particles. The employee may also be at risk of experiencing flash burns, skin burns, electrical shocks and high noise levels. Personal Protective Equipment must always be worn (including but not limited to: metatarsal safety boots, safety glasses, welding helmet, welding gloves/sleeves, earplugs and respiratory protection).
