JOB DESCRIPTION
The Health, Safety and Equipment trainer's responsibilities are to assist in the development, teaching and monitoring of safety training programs for Irving Shipbuilding employees at all locations (Bluenose, WSD, MFAB and HSL).
The Health, Safety and Equipment trainer is also responsible for maintaining equipment certifications for 3 sites (Irving Shipbuilding, Woodside and Marine Fabricators). The equipment includes:

  • Under 10 ton crane
  • Mobile elevated work platform (150')
  • Forklift (various classes)
  • DTA- SPMT's
  • Payloader
  • Skid steer

This role is responsible for supporting overall training effectiveness through optimizing our Learning & Development systems, submitting training records for all employees, and ensuring that all curriculum is delivered in a fashion that will allow the workforce to retain the required knowledge to pass the certification test and perform work safely in production.
This individual will be one of the first points of contact for new hires at ISI. This includes Local 1, Staff (all levels), subcontractors, and the customer (DND) as they will also be responsible for subcontractor orientations. The trainer will be responsible for supervising up to 20 people during onboarding. During training the instructor is responsible for employees health and safety by ensuring compliance with all HSE work instructions. The instructor will need to ensure they are aware of any changes to the applicable CSA standard to adjust their training accordingly so that ISI maintains its compliance for this training.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Course preparation, including all documentation and supplies.
  • Facilitate presentations- Theory and practical.
  • New Hire Onboarding; Supervise group for full week. Responsible for safety and pay.
  • Upload training records internally and through 3M's instructor's training portal.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 years successful completion of post-secondary education in a relevant field and willingness to continue education.
  • 5 years of related work experience.
  • CSA standards and DOL regulations.
  • Knowledge of principles of adult education.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate equipment.
  • Computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability conduct theoretical and technical training.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with all levels of leadership and union.
