Under the direction of Chef Michael Smith and Chastity Smith, we offer a five-star inn and dining room seating up to 86 guests at our nightly FireWorks Feast from May to October. Our ingredients are sourced from our on-site culinary farm and other local producers. Together with our farm, we create a ten-course, live-fire-cooked, Island-focused experience.

The finer details

  • Job Location: Fortune, Prince Edward Island
  • Work Conditions: Outdoor culinary farm with cooking fires, wood cutting area, and woodland trails
  • Work Term: Part-time seasonal (start immediately and work until October)
  • Schedule: Approximately 5 days per week, 4 hours per day
  • Starting Salary: $16.25-$18.25 per hour, based on experience
  • Benefits: 4% vacation pay. Complimentary staff meals every morning and afternoon during your working hours. Compensation for the purchase of steel-toed footwear, which are a requirement of the job, up to $80.00 every two years.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Manager and the Chief Operations Officer, you will:

  1. Receive training and guidance from the current Woodsperson.
  2. Transport lumber to the various culinary fires around the property using our on-site equipment.
  3. Create visually appealing designs with the split wood according to the Proprietors' vision.
  4. Maintain general tidiness of the property; remove branches and other debris from the grounds where necessary.
  5. Collaborate with the Woodsperson and the Facilities Manager to accomplish other related tasks on the property.
  6. Act and communicate with staff and guests in keeping with The Inn at Bay Fortune's five-star hospitality expectations; perform job functions with a sense of urgency and focus.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Chainsaw license is an asset.
  • First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Additional courses and training on forestry and related topics are assets.
  • On-the-job training will be provided.

Skills/Success Factors

  1. Comfortable working in outdoor environments and in weather conditions such as the wet spring and the hot summer.
  2. Keen awareness of and attention to workplace health and safety.
  3. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and carry heavy objects.
  4. Comfortable performing repetitive tasks.
  5. Professional communication skills; communicates when in need of assistance.
  6. Must display a friendly demeanour and a team player attitude.
  7. Must demonstrate an eagerness to learn and work hard.
  8. Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  9. Punctual; communicates appropriately with supervisor if absent or arriving late for a shift.
  10. Interest in Prince Edward Island forestry and wood splitting.
