Job Description:

Position: Personal Support Worker
Category: Seasonal
Reports to: Camp Coordinator

Summary:

The Personal Support Worker position is a casual position working with Town of Cornwall camps. This position is responsible for the integration of children with physical or intellectual disabilities into group activities at camps.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop an individual case plan and final report for all individuals.
  • Modify games or activities to ensure child can participate.
  • Provide personal care, feeding, toileting, dressing and bathing for participants as required.
  • Oversee child participation and modify programs or activities as needed to ensure participation.
  • Providing emotional support and encouragement to participants.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Assist in tidying up after activities.
  • Be familiar with the special needs, medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems of the campers and act according to directions provided by the parent or guardian, educational system, or any other member of the support team.
  • Be a positive role model to campers and be available to campers.
  • Ensure that safety standards are always maintained.
  • Report any accidents/incidents to the Camp Coordinator (incident reports)

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be creative and energetic.
  • Knowledge of program development.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of active and passive recreational opportunities.
  • Ensure an environment that provides excellent customer service in the community.
  • Good conflict management abilities.
  • Knowledge of accident prevention and reporting procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow department policies and procedures.

Education and Experience:

  • Must have completed or be currently enrolled in a post secondary program in Human Services, Recreation or Early Childhood.
  • Must have experience in working with people with disabilities.
  • Must have experience in the delivery and development of recreation programs.
  • Must be certified in CPR and First-Aid training or willingness to obtain in the first three months.
  • Additional training, seminars related to program delivery is an asset.
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector required upon hire.

Work Environment:

  • Fill in for staff during turn over or unanticipated leaves of absence.
  • Requires lifting.
