Applications are now being received for the temporary, full-time Summer General Maintenance I position in the Markham Museum in the Culture Services Department of the Community Services Commission. To apply for this position, please submit your cover letter and resume online by February 22, 2025.

JOB SUMMARY

This position assists with general and specialized maintenance throughout the property during our busy summer season. Daily duties will support externally booked events and our large summer camp program, in addition to overall stewardship of the facilities and gardens of the Museum for the enjoyment of general visitors. This is a full-time student position with a variable schedule. Employees will be required to work some weekends and evenings.

  • Assists with the interior cleaning of the Museum buildings. Working around objects, artifacts following specific guidelines and practices for artifact handling and moving.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance (i.e. mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, window cleaning, washroom cleaning, painting, scraping, garbage pick up, detail cleaning, setups and breakdowns of tables and chairs).
  • Cleaning inside artifact storage and exhibition areas while managing the risk of damage to the storage & display units and artifacts.
  • May operate power tools such as a sander, cleaning & safety equipment.
  • Responds and directs requests from colleagues, patrons (general public) and other City of Markham staff on general issues and/or maintenance requests.
  • Patrols the building looking for facility problems, safety hazards, or improper departmental operations.
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are being followed by patrons.
  • Assists in ensuring a safe and organized work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Completion of high school
  • Currently attending a post-secondary institution in applied sciences, architecture, building management, landscaping or trades is an asset.
  • Must have safety green patch steel toed boots.
  • Experience in the safe operation and use of hand tools, power tools, gardening and grass cutting equipment is required (such as golf carts, push mower, cord trimmers, power washer, drills and sanders)
  • An interest in general maintenance, landscaping, carpentry and care of heritage properties is an asset
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • G Driver's License is an asset
  • Completion of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening check as determined by the City of Markham.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of user groups, general public, and program participants in a courteous and efficient manner are required
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Must be flexible to work in a dynamic and changing environment
  • Candidate must be physically capable of performing all bona fide duties including heavy lifting (up to 20 kg), as well as bending, and stooping, overhead reaches while positioning objects, and general manoeuvrability on a 25-acre site, while being safety conscious at all times
  • Due to the nature of the site, the candidates will be required to work outdoors from time to time and in unconditioned storage buildings where they may be exposed to weather fluctuations, pollens, molds, dust, insects and other small wild animals.
