The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for providing programming and extension associated with agriculture in the province of Saskatchewan. It helps the agriculture industry manage risk and enable a globally competitive, thriving and sustainable agriculture and food sector by supporting farmers, ranchers and agri-business.

The Regional Services Branch within the Ministry of Agriculture has a dynamic opportunity for a highly-motivated leader with excellent communication skills to join their Crops Extension Specialist team.

As a Crops Extension Specialist, you will work with farmers, producer groups and industry to offer agronomic information and advice on proven crop production practices by:

  • Developing and delivering in-depth and comprehensive technical expertise in crop production management;
  • Providing leadership in developing, implementing and promoting crop extension priorities;
  • Identifying crops-related research and extension priorities to increase the adoption of new agricultural technologies and practices relevant to the crops sector; and
  • Collaborating with ministry partners to deliver client service focused on program awareness, public trust, environment, research and technology transfer.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced agrologist who has in-depth knowledge of crops, soils, pest management and other topics relevant to crop production in Saskatchewan, and who is:

  • A leader in the delivery of client service;
  • An independent worker who also has the ability to work in a dynamic team of specialists;
  • An exceptional communicator who is able to strategically interpret and transfer relevant information to producers, industry and colleagues;
  • Organized and able to independently prioritize and meet deadlines;
  • A strong interpersonal leader with demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional relationships with colleagues, technical specialists and industry clients; and
  • Able to identify, analyze and develop viable options, explanations and solutions to complex agricultural production problems.

Typically, the competencies required for this position would be obtained through a degree in agriculture with a major in agronomy, soil or plant science combined with extensive experience in crop production. A Professional Agrologist designation or eligibility to obtain designation with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists is required, as defined by The Agrologists Act.

A valid class 5 driver's license is required.
