The Licensed Practical Nurse (Theatre Qualified) provides practical nursing services in an operating room environment as a member of an integrated surgical team performing varied and complex surgical interventions. Consults, confers, and collaborates with other members of the surgical team in facilitating safe and effective surgical interventions through the performance ofcirculating duties, and scrubbing in accordance with established standards and protocols. This includes pre-operative, operative, and post-operative activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting client care, and providing support to clients and their families. Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents patient care during the pre-operative, operative and immediate post-operative periods. Performs scrub duties, admission of patient to the ORand circulatingduties, in collaboration with the peri-operative team and the RN coordinating care in the O.As an assistant to and upon request of the RN coordinating care in the operating room, performs duties which assist the primary circulating RN in her role. Alerts the RN to any problems, changes or unusual signs or symptoms of the patient while in the operating room setting. Documents observations, treatment and other patient care activities during the pre, intra and post-operative periods by performing duties such as recording observations/information onto patient record. Attends a variety of meetings such as staff meetings and quality improvement rounds to provide and obtain information and feedback about patients and patient care. Performs related clerical duties such as answering the telephone, taking and relaying messages and assisting in maintaining standardized records. Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses with the full range of current licensed practical nursing competencies, and graduation from an accredited O.R. program for Licensed Practical Nurses plus one (1) year recent related experience working as a Licensed Practical Nurse in acute care, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
