The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the PICU (part of the Child and Youth Acute Health Care Portfolio of McMaster Children's Hospital) will join a dynamic provider care team that includes Pediatric Intensivists, Pediatric Critical Care fellows, and resident trainees. This provider group works seamlessly with a comprehensive interprofessional PICU team to treat all disorders affecting critically ill pediatric patients
The NP will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric critical care through expert clinical practice. The NP, with support and oversight from the physician group, will manage and coordinate the full spectrum of patient care activities in both the level 2 and level 3 Pediatric Critical Care Units. The PICU NP will receive education, skills training, and mentorship in order to eventually grow and function as a specialized advanced pediatric critical care practitioner.

In addition to direct clinical care, the NP role includes activities related to education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. Accordingly, the NP will participate in initiating and/or leading programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of critical care at McMaster Children's Hospital.

The NP will report to the Director, Child and Youth Acute Health Care Program, McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Interprofessional Practice.

Qualifications

1. Current Certificate of Registration in the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class RN(EC)
2. Completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing, with an Advanced Practice Nurse Certificate in Pediatrics, (NP-Pediatrics)
3. Minimum of 4-6 years recent pediatric nursing experience, experience within a pediatric critical care unit preferred
4. Proficiency in performing history and physical examination of the infant, toddler, child, and adolescent. Proficiency with basic nursing skills (e.g., vascular access) in infants, toddlers, and children is preferred.
5. Ability to triage and independently manage acute medical emergencies in pediatric patients appropriately including knowledge and skill to operate the highly specialized pieces of equipment in the PICU and the ability to trouble shoot and respond appropriately when problems arise
6. Experience and knowledge to recognize emergent calls and distinguish urgent from semi-urgent and nonurgent medical matters and conditions
7. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
8. Ability to compassionately work with patients and families managing critical illness
9. Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children including supporting death and dying
10. Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
11. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, organization and prioritization
12. Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
13. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the multidisciplinary team
14. Knowledge and experience in change theory and pediatric learning principles
15. Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology
16. Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other professional organizations relevant to the role
17. Certification in PALS, BCLS and relevant certificates recommended
18. Committed to acquire new knowledge and ensure competency
19. Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level
