JOB SUMMARY:
The role of the LWE Senior Environmental Specialist is to manage certain environmental files related to ecosystem health and relationship building, and to support the environmental team on proactive TWN environmental initiatives.
The LWE Senior Environmental Specialist is responsible for managing and coordinating projects pertaining the Indian River Watershed Integrated Stewardship Plan, restoration projects, protected areas, and other areas including kelp, eelgrass, elk and clam beds, and fisheries policy.
As well as supporting the Environmental Programs Manager with the Burrard Inlet Action Plan implementation, program planning, staff mentorship, and other proactive environmental initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works closely and collaboratively with the Environmental Programs Manager, and other staff in the Treaty, Lands and Resources Department to to advance the department's mandate, and program planning.
- Represent Tsleil-Waututh on project files and build relationships with external agencies and proponents
- Presenting TWN's environmental work at conferences and workshops
- Directly communicates with Crown governments, agencies, proponents and other First Nations on a technical level, signing off on technical level communications and Works to establish positive working relationships.
- Drafts reports/letters of response to Crown governments, agencies, and proponents.
- Prepare, facilitate and lead internal and external meetings.
- Advancing TWNs vision and role in developing new governance and decision-making structures and environmental protections for Burrard Inlet
- Project manage and coordinate a variety of environmental files, including restoration projects, Indian River Watershed Integrated Stewardship Plan, and key TWN relationships taking direction from Environmental Programs Manager, Advisors, and planning documents.
- Work closely with the wider TWN fisheries team in fisheries policy, community communication, and program growth.
- Participates as a member of the Treaty, Lands and Resources Department team.
- Assist the Consultation and Accommodation team with referral and consultation requests.
- Writes, reviews, drafts and edits departmental, program and project reports, letters, and documentation as required.
- Provide input into the development of funding proposals, reports and other deliverables.
- Assist with the implementation and delivery of other Department initiatives as directed.
- Perform other duties as required
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides mentorship and support to other LWE staff
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Planning or related field plus three to five (3-5) years of highly relevant work experience including project management, policy analysis, and Aboriginal Rights and Title.
- Master's degree considered an asset.
- May consider alternate combinations of education and relevant work experience.
- Understanding of the current and historical culture of Coast Salish peoples.
- Direct field experience such as planning and conducting marine scientific studies and/or restoration projects.
- Ability to exercise considerable independence and judgement, while discussing more complex matters with the team manager
- Excellent written communication and analytical skills; attention to detail.
- Self-motivated; able to work successfully independently and as part of a team.
- Strong project management skills, with ability to create workplans, complete deadlines and objectives independently.
- Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Brings a creative and unconventional approach to problem solving (ability to think outside the box).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure; demonstrate flexibility, cooperation and ability to shift priorities rapidly.
- Ability to solve practical problems in a culturally appropriate manner and deal with many variables in situations.
- Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is preferred.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Able to participate and complete in job-related workshops, training, seminars and conferences to upgrade skills and training as required.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under pressure; demonstrate flexibility, cooperation and ability to shift priorities rapidly.
- Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check.

- Hybrid of work from home and in office work, with a presence in office required
