Two full-time positions are available (1 fixed-term; 1 regular)

Position Summary:

To provide the planning, development, implementation and expertise necessary to ensure the application of health and safety measures on McGill University construction sites. Work and collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders to maintain the University's health and safety objectives on construction sites. Participate in the improvement of health and safety practices on university construction sites. This position is 100% on-site and is shared between Downtown and, on certain occasions, our Macdonald Campus.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the application of health and safety standards and requirements on University construction sites.
  • Evaluate contractors' and subcontractors' prevention programs and procedures to ensure that they comply with regulatory requirements and those of the main contractor.
  • Inform and raise awareness among project managers about health and safety regulations on construction sites.
  • Inspect and audit construction sites, recommend corrective measures and issue notices of non-compliance.
  • Review and validate safety analysis of tasks submitted by the contractor.
  • Identify risks associated with the work and create preventive measures to protect occupants and university facilities.
  • Oversee, incident/accident investigations, document causes and supervise the implementation of preventive and corrective measures.
  • Prepare health and safety reports and statistics.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement of results and the means used to achieve them.
  • Receive and comment on reports from industrial hygiene and health and safety consultants.
  • Establish and develop successful partnerships with all relevant stakeholders. Establish reliable working relationships, including explicit collaboration and consultation with CNESST inspectors assigned to McGill construction sites;
  • Represent the project management team in terms of health & safety on various university committees;

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Certificate in health and safety and/or DEC in industrial hygiene is an asset.
  • College diploma in architecture or civil engineering is an asset.
  • 3 years' experience in the construction industry, worksite health and safety.
  • Health and safety agent certification for construction sites (CNESST) is an asset.
  • Have the ASP construction card.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Practical knowledge of safe working methods and experience of accident investigation as well as compliance with standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of the various laws and regulations applicable to Quebec construction sites.
  • Ability to comment on environmental specifications (asbestos, lead, silica, etc.).
  • Understanding of the Microsoft Office suite and ability to adopt new technologies.
  • English and French, spoken and written.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4.
