Business Development Manager For Maritime Contracted Research

The Business Development Manager for Contracted Research in Ottawa, Canada drives Contract R&D (CRAD) growth by capturing significant research, development, test/evaluation, and demonstration projects funded by the Canadian Government and other research organizations in Canada. This position will develop and capture grants and contracts across various topics, including shipbuilding and ship sustainment projects, clean energy and decarbonization, digital analytics, remote and autonomous functions, etc. The role requires identifying and developing critical relationships with funding organizations and other research partners to capture strategically important projects. While all roles supporting maritime projects are considered, the priority will be developing projects and programs that establish ABS as a recognized leader in R&D programs in Canada (e.g., serving as the prime organization on significant research projects and even managing research centers).

What You Will Do:

  • Develop strategic research plans and teaming strategies for specific funding sponsors and contract vehicles to meet or exceed CRAD sales and revenue targets.
  • Communicate sponsor needs and project opportunities to relevant ABS technical teams globally.
  • Develop and maintain key client and research partner relationships focusing on positioning ABS to capture key CRAD opportunities.
  • Lead the development of visit plans for clients and partners, including organizing client meetings for ABS senior management.
  • Maintain awareness of the overall ABS service portfolio/research initiatives and promote services/products as appropriate.
  • Provide strategic insight in CRAD business planning activities concerning the market and specific opportunities in Canada.
  • Work with organizational teams to develop capture strategies, proposals, and pricing as appropriate.
  • Work with technical staff and other internal teams to ensure customer needs/expectations are met.
  • Attend industry events and conferences and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.
  • Identify opportunities for marketing campaigns within Canada that will increase sales.
  • Submit reports as needed and ensure data is accurately entered and managed within the company's data management systems.
  • Forecast targets and track research and development opportunities to meet these targets.
  • Directly lead capture efforts to meet annual sales goals and position ABS to meet end-year objectives for CRAD business in Canada.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business or an engineering, science, or technical research field is required.
  • An advanced technical degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) with experience in government-funded grant programs is preferred.
  • Typically, seven (7) or more years of experience setting and achieving goals for CRAD (or similar) projects and programs within Canada.
  • Previous experience working with various academic, industry, commercial, and nongovernment organizations (NGO) partners on CRAD projects is preferred.
  • Previous experience in business development or sales in a technical and diverse product environment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated insight into sales, business development, and account management with experience in meeting and/or exceeding sales targets preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing strategic customer and partner relationships within the contracted R&D business environment.
  • Strong leadership presence and the ability to quickly establish and build credibility and relationships, externally and internally to ABS.
  • Excellent business judgment, including assessing the reasonableness and likelihood of success of various business scenarios.
  • Demonstrated technical acumen related to contracted research & development within the maritime industry.
  • A self-starter with a demonstrated desire to achieve goals and a collaborative personality who effectively works with teams and individuals to achieve organizational business outcomes.
  • Strong commitment to ethical business practices in full accordance with relevant corporate policies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Position reports to the ABS Vice President for Global Government Business Development.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily in a professional office setting with possible field revisits to field sites (i.e., shipyards, field offices, etc.) and/or dedicated onsite office periods at client sites as required. The position may require significant travel domestically or internationally. The position will require travel and client-related work beyond regular working hours.
