If yes, you may be the perfect Laboratory Technician to join us at AlumaPower, a well-funded cleantech start-up with facilities in both Sarnia and Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Our breakthrough multi-patented technology re-invents the aluminum-air battery as a 'galvanic generator'– potentially providing four times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

We are now developing an innovative long-life energy source that runs on post-consumer scrap, or "abandoned" aluminum, as a fuel source - displacing hydrocarbons, and complementing other battery solutions such as lithium-ion.

This job is based in Sarnia, and you will be reporting to our Senior Test Technician. Your primary duty will be to aid in the testing and development of our galvanic technology.

Your job will involve laboratory-based tasks including sampling, testing, measuring, troubleshooting, recording, and analyzing the results. Your ultimate goal will be to provide the necessary technical support to ensure the laboratory runs smoothly while following the correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Relevant College Diploma or Degree, and a passion for lifelong learning.
  • 1-2 years of technical experience in a Laboratory setting.
  • Must have a strong understanding of WHMIS and SDS.
  • Must be knowledgeable in health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Knowledge of common laboratory techniques, terminology, equipment, and materials.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemical and physical testing and analyses, including the preparation of materials, equipment, and samples.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite applications; specifically competency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Manual dexterity skills in laboratory manipulative techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively in team atmospheres or individually with little supervision.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Effective attention to detail.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations calmly and steadily.

Job Duties

  • Perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and relevant data to support scientific investigations.
  • Prepare and maintain test apparatus.
  • Perform troubleshooting and calibration of instruments.
  • Construct, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment: burettes, vacuum filter pumps, load testers, and resistance meters etc.
  • Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and communicate equipment needs to the lab manager.
  • Make detailed observations; analyze data and interpret results.
  • Write test reports and/or summaries from all analyses and tests in the prescribed time and form and maintain statistical records in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Make detailed observations, interpret results, and present findings to colleagues.
  • Use computers for the preparation of graphs and data analysis.
  • Keep up to date with technical and process developments across the organization.
  • Demonstrate practical procedures.
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics, according to testing needs.
  • Adhere to strict safety procedures and safety checks.
  • Prepare and send samples for third-party analysis.
  • Organize lab re-agents and maintain SDS inventory.
  • Responsible for daily lab cleaning, waste disposal, safety duties, and lab shutdown procedures.
  • Complete other duties as necessary. Due to the rapid development of technology in this workspace, it may require certain responsibilities and duties to change at any time.

Compensation

  • Commensurate with experience.

Location

  • Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
  • You must be fully permitted to live and work in Canada.

Job Type and Working Conditions

  • This is a Full-time role.
  • Interactions with hazardous chemicals in a safe and environmentally conscious manner using proper PPE.
  • Respirator fit testing
  • Manual dexterity is required to use laboratory equipment, desktop computers, and peripherals.
  • Intermittent physical activity, including standing, sitting, and lifting.
  • Periodic Overtime as required
