True North Manufacturing Inc. (TNMI) is an industrialized construction company based in Orillia, ON, focused on value added panelized wall and floor systems, as well as sub-assembly components for residential construction.

By combining key manufacturing concepts from automotive and other industries, including the conflow process model, our products help to greatly reduce costs and lead-time while simultaneously improving quality.

We are also students of the Toyota Production System and the Toyota Way and have adapted these core strategies into our own TNMI Way.

Role Description and Responsibilities Summary:

This is a full-time on-site role for a Specialist - Engineering Design at TNMI. The Specialist - Engineering Design at TNMI will be responsible for interpreting architectural / customer drawings, creation of shop floor drawings, construction site drawings and new product design & testing.

This position is ideal for those passionate about translating conceptual designs into practical applications within the construction industry, specifically focusing on low- and mid-rise residential construction.

  • Design Execution: Interpreting architectural and customer drawings to create comprehensive construction and shop floor drawings. You will be involved in all phases from design through to construction administration.
  • Drawing Preparation: Generating detailed construction drawing sets using specialized software. This includes site plans, floor plans, building sections, and wall details.
  • Innovation in Design: Engage in new product design and testing, ensuring alignment with the latest design trends, building codes, and innovations.
  • Quality and Safety Compliance: Ensure all designs adhere to both customer expectations and TNMI's stringent safety and quality standards.
  • Professional Development: Embrace continuous learning to enhance your skills, with a significant focus on training and development within the TNMI Engineering - Design functions.
  • Customer and Team Interaction: Maintain a professional, service-oriented approach within the team and uphold the values encapsulated in the TNMI Way.
  • Continuous Improvement Principles: Advocate for and apply TPS (Toyota Production System) principles and methodologies in day-to-day activities.
  • Additional Duties: Take on special projects, perform additional duties as necessary, and participate in a mandatory annual rotation in production operations.
  • Willingness to work overtime and/or weekends as needed.
  • Working in production operations is part of the initial Orientation & Training process. There is a mandatory annual production operations rotation. There is an extensive assessment process for this role.

What We are Looking For:

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams software. Strong REVIT, Vertex and AutoCAD experience required.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Team oriented, communicates well with others and able to interact with people at all levels and departments.

  • Sound problem solving skills and desire to succeed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 – 5 years related work experience working as an Architecture Technologist or Designer.
  • 3+ years work experience working with building codes in Ontario/Canada.
  • A design portfolio including multi-residential, single detached, and low- and mid-rise developments that demonstrates design excellence.
  • Proficient in building technology and construction methodologies, with a thorough understanding of material selection and the application of manufacturers specifications.
  • Demonstrated efficiency in producing working drawings and extensive experience in navigating the building permit process in Ontario/Canada.
  • Minimum completion of post-secondary education, in Architectural Technology Diploma or related Architecture education from a recognized institution.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $73,008 - $102,960 per year.
