This is a unique role and opportunity in the Office of the Chief Communications Officer. This position specializes in core service delivery and supporting priority projects that require cross-department alignment. This Communications Advisor will be able to take organization-wide risks and opportunities to create strategic and coordinated communications responses. Whether responding to an emergency, or a long-term initiative, they will be able to build strong relationships to collaboratively propel cross-department projects forward.

This Communications Advisor is a key member of the City's crisis communications team. They are the primary Public Information Officer for Edmonton's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) or evacuation reception centre activations. The Communications Advisor will collaborate with EOC, department staff and supporting agencies or partners to make sure the public receives timely, accurate information during emergencies. This work is fast-paced and activations can occur with little notice, and has meaningful impact to the public and surrounding communities in times of crisis.

Outside of emergencies, this Communications Advisor will use their strong cross-department relationships and ability to find themes and alignments in individual projects to support media relations, public information sharing and public engagement activities related to The City Plan and City priorities.

  • Develop and implement communication plans and products to address emergency or crisis situations including natural disasters, public safety issues, collective bargaining, legal issues, significant service and program disruptions, and more
  • Support the corporate communications manager in updating and maintaining the Crisis communications plan and Crisis Communications team readiness
  • Support integration and alignment of department objectives with corporate communications planning and day to day operations
  • Lead or collaborate on the development of integrated marketing communications strategies communications plans, messaging and content strategies
  • Support the development of integrated, strategic communications, marketing, engagement and external relations plans
  • Write, edit, review, coordinate and lead work on communications and marketing products
  • Provide internal and external marketing and communications advice and tactical support

Qualifications

Qualifications :

  • University degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field, supplemented by two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a designated communications, journalism, crisis or emergency communications, public relations, public affairs or public information position
    OR
  • Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a designated communications, journalism, crisis or emergency communications, public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Proven experience with ability to successfully create, develop, implement and evaluate strategic communication plans
  • Experience working in an Emergency Operations Centre, on a crisis communications response or on a cross-departmental/organizational project
  • A minimum of ICS 200 is required for this position. ICS 200 has a prerequisite of ICS 100. Applicants are preferred to provide proof of completed training. Applicants without ICS 200 will be considered, but must have the ability to achieve ICS 200 certification within 30 days of hire. A minimum of ICS 200 training is required or ability to complete this certification within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to work a variety of hours, including evenings and weekends, during an emergency activation
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of best practices, requirements of internal and external communications, as well as mass communication
  • Demonstrated understanding of crisis communications and media relations
  • Extensive knowledge of communications principles, techniques and practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Relationship-building skills with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
  • Proven ability to establish effective working relationships

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week
During regular operations, this position will work standard hours. During an emergency activation, this individual will be subject to adjustments to hours of work, in accordance with the Collective Agreement, and required to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends.
This position will also be required to work at additional locations, including the Emergency Operations Centre or evacuation reception centres, when activated.
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $41.517 - $52.314 (Hourly); $86,687.500 - $109,231.630 (Annually)
