Job Information

The Mineral Resources Analyst (Analyst) is located in Yellowknife and reports to the Manager, Mineral Resources (Manager) and is part of a team of planning and technical professionals. The Analyst supports the implementation of the Mineral Development Strategy (MDS) and provides technical input into regulatory, land use and policy initiatives.

The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Division (MPR) develops and delivers policy, programs and services related to minerals and petroleum exploration and development, transportation to market, and the management of land tenure associated with mineral and petroleum subsurface resource rights for public lands in the NWT.

The Analyst supports the implementation of the Mineral Development Strategy (MDS). The MDS is one of the GNWT's key policy instruments in improving investor and public confidence in the mineral resource sector. The vision of the MDS and its programs is to realize, responsibly and sustainably, the full potential of our rich mineral resources and use it to support ongoing prosperity for NWT residents and communities. The MDS is a 15 year Strategy with short, medium and long term outcomes, correlating to five, ten, and 15 year time horizons. The Analyst will be challenged to work with other Departments whose main priority is not the MDS, but to report on MDS related projects and initiatives within their mandates.

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of public policy theory and principles, development, analysis and evaluation and their application to mineral resource development.Knowledge of the operating environment and structure of the Canadian and NWT mineral exploration and mine operations sectors and of resource development, Indigenous relations issues and environmental issues and assessment.

Typically attained by:

An undergraduate degree in Political Science, Business Administration, Law, Economics, Earth Sciences or a related field plus three to five years of progressively related experience.
Assets include:
- Experience in one or more of the phases of the mineral development life cycle (i.e., exploration through remediation).
- Experience in mineral policy development in a province/territory.
