We are seeking a dedicated Junior Accountant to join our dynamic team, contributing to our commitment to making a positive impact in the community. As a Junior Accountant, you will play a crucial role in the financial success of IslamicFamily by supporting internal reporting, budgeting, and strategic planning. Your responsibilities will encompass monthly financial reporting, grant cash flow updates, and ensuring excellence in reporting and transparency.

Your Impact
  • Maintain accurate financial reporting in accordance with Accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO)
  • Contribute to the development of innovative and impactful projects, including Shariah-compliant housing initiatives and tech subsidiaries
  • Facilitate the meticulous oversight of Zakat, ensuring financial resources support the community's need
  • Help build/implement the systems, policies & procedures that facilitate scaling social impact; from automating and streamlining non-profit reporting to supporting frontline staff with tools that reduce financial strain on both them and clients

What we're looking for…
  • Detail oriented & mission aligned professional who wants to grow their career and have an impact in the for-benefit sector.
  • Maintain and update accounting records for the association and its subsidiaries/affiliates
  • Ensure the effectiveness of internal controls for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets
  • Manage cost allocations between departments and subsidiaries to optimise resource utilization
  • Conduct thorough analysis of financial data, presenting accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Prepare and maintain quarterly budgets and forecasts, meticulously evaluating spending patterns for strategic planning
  • Prepare reporting for funders & ensure compliance with agreements
  • Provide support in reporting and planning initiatives
Basic Qualifications
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in accounting or finance
  • 1-2 years of progressive accounting experience; non-profit experience considered an asset
  • Flexible with technology, comfortable with G Suite and Slack
  • Must complete a Police Vulnerable Services Check prior to starting
  • Commitment to ongoing training
  • Excellent etiquette and the ability to convey complex financial information to a general audience in a cohesive, patient and clear manner
  • Must maintain the legal right to work in Canada

Do I need to live in Edmonton?

Why wouldn't you want to live in Edmonton? But seriously, we realise great talent may be anywhere and we've embraced the shift to virtual work. We would like in-person presence for quarterly presentations and the development of the annual budget.

What is Halal financing and why is it important to you?

Halal financing is about economic justice and a fairer way of distributing wealth. It is based on Islamic principles of shared risk, avoiding: fixed interest, investments that cause harm, & what is prohibited by Islam. It's the bedrock of how we operate and try to achieve beneficial change in society.

Do I need to have experience in non-profit accounting?

No, but we would like to know about how you intend to learn about non-profit accounting standards.
