Normally Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, however, will require flexibility to be adjusted to 7:00 am to 3:00 pm to meet facilities operational requirements.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Facilities, Safety & Security the incumbent provides technical, organizational and administrative support and services related to college wide projects, operations and maintenance of shops and equipment. This position includes the evaluation of mechanical, electrical and general building systems as well as manage the cyclical maintenance of and emergency repair of equipment.

The Facilities Campus Technician will develop, implement and evaluate facility operations processes and programs including the delivery of capital and operational projects. The incumbent works under variable conditions, indoors as well as outdoors in all types of weather, and may be required to access roof areas, hatches, crawl spaces, and areas that may be hot and humid, noisy and light and movement restricted. Travel and work outside of normal working hours may be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Investigate and trouble shoot building and equipment issues. Work directly with contractors or consultants where required to determine issue resolution and create proposals for correction.

2. Oversee the work of contractors and consultants to ensure successful completion of work. Review work has been completed to ensure issue have been resolved and approve payment.

3. On projects, manage the work and schedules of multiple contractors to ensure projects are completed successfully on time and on budget.

4. Travel to other campus locations to provide support as required

5. Review annual facility assessment ( VFA ) and make recommendations for areas requiring replacement/upgrade

6. Work directly with Faculty and space users to create a schedule for repair that creates minimal disruption.

7. Compile reports as directed for Ministry of Advanced Education and Risk Management Services and support the process for the submission of funding proposals.

8. Provide support as directed for the coordination and review of assigned contracts and contracted services; space and facility review, the procurement and processing of materials, equipment and services.

9. Prepare contract and tender documents when assigned to meet regulatory requirements and related service level agreements.

10. Prepare project plans including cost and material estimates, project schedules and reports from initiation through to implementation for facility projects.

11. Provide support in the development, implementation and maintenance of preventative maintenance programs, communication and financial reporting systems and supporting documentation.

12. Supports trades programing machinery, equipment and tools to ensure in safe working order and test as required for program instruction. This may include mobilizing and demobilizing tools and equipment for instruction.

13. Responsible for the oversite, repair and maintenance of shop equipment. As directed by the Director, Facilities, Safety & Security, repairs carried out by the Technician are to be limited to their trade or technical area of expertise.

14. Other duties may be required as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

1. Trade Qualification, this may include Electrical, Millwright or Mechanical trades.

2. 2.5 years apprenticeship on the job training plus a minimum of 3 years post TQ experience required. Including the equivalent experience working within facilities management in progressively more responsible roles.

3. Experience working in an educational setting and familiar with the delivery of educational programming is preferred.

4. Formal training in property or contract administration considered an asset.

5. The incumbent must hold and maintain a valid British Columbia Driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

1. Demonstrated ability to problem solve technical and operational information and provide advice to all stakeholders

2. Evidenced project management skills to ensure efficiency and business continuity as project liaison and representative of North Island College

3. Developed skills in interpretation of building plans, procurement and project cost/estimate processes

4. Ability to work independently with limited supervision

5. Ensure the provision of exceptional quality service that satisfies our customers and supports continued improvement of processes and builds strong relationships with all stakeholders.

6. Developed inter-personal skills to communicate with all internal and external stakeholders, using all established methods.

7. Demonstrated ability to use computer applications to maintain schedules of operational maintenance of building systems and equipment required within the faculty of trades, track progress on new construction, renovations as well aid in the development and maintenance of preventative maintenance programs, communications and financial reporting systems.

8. Intermediate computer skills to include Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc). Experience in AutoCAD would be an asset.
