Position Purpose:

The Specialist, Strategic Reporting provides financial reporting support including preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements and notes. This position works closely with various business units throughout the organization and assists in special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and consolidates quarterly and annual financial statements, including notes to the financial statements, in accordance with IFRS
  • Monitors and reports on IFRS developments, exposure drafts and new and/or revised standards
  • Provide guidance and support to accounting group and other business units to ensure accuracy and compliance with internal processes, IFRS and Modified IFRS
  • Prepare accounting policy memos and analyze contracts entered into by Alectra for accounting policy impacts
  • Provides financial data analysis and expertise to assist other departments in attaining their respective objectives relative to process and data quality improvement
  • Identifies and recommends process or procedural improvements to improve the quality and timeliness of financial information and to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness for financial reporting
  • Continuously improves the efficiency and accuracy of the reporting process including automation of the reporting tools
  • Provide business units with regular updates on changes in accounting policies impacting Alectra's accounting and financial reporting processes through accounting policy newsletters and trainings
  • Assist with implementation and subsequent reporting of ESG requirements
  • Monitor IFRS developments, interpret, document and provide recommendations on proper application and implementation of these standards into work processes and key deliverables
  • Supports the implementation of new accounting and financial reporting requirements under IFRS by modifying existing reports, models, database and other system changes
  • Assists with external financial statement audits through the preparation of supporting documentation and reviewing of confidential payroll information required to the auditors
  • Provides technical expertise in the planning, design and implementation of projects and key initiatives
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Specialized Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting
  • CA/CPA Designation
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class "G" driver's license
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge of IFRS
  • Superior proficiency with IT-based automated reporting tools
  • Superior proficiency with Excel application
  • Proficiency with other MS Office applications
  • Knowledge of the energy and utility industries, including a solid understanding of the regulatory environment

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years related work experience including financial reporting and variance analysis
  • Experience in working in a recognized audit firm a strong asset
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset
  • Experience with IBM Cognos, or Workiva Wdesk and Modified IFRS an asset
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Ability to follow established processes with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Solid problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex technical issues
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information in an organized and concise way
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Have a valid G licence
