The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) works through wide-ranging partnerships and initiatives to deliver quality programs and services that promote and support economic development, diversification and prosperity in the interest of Northwest Territories residents – their businesses and communities.

Job Information

Located in Yellowknife, you will be reporting to the Senior Permafrost Scientist. You will work with other geoscientists at the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) to advance knowledge of surficial geology, permafrost, and geohazards with focus on NWT communities by compiling and analyzing geotechnical and spatial data, conducting field research, and preparing surficial geology, permafrost, and terrain maps and reports.

In working with diverse teams of research partners, you will conduct fieldwork across a wide range of geographic settings that characterize NWT. You will have opportunities to apply your project outputs and geoscience knowledge by working with government, community, and Indigenous partners in developing products that support decision making, climate change adaptation, and community resilience.

You will require knowledge of scientific principles and techniques pertaining to Quaternary geology, permafrost and geohazard research, and mapping. You will require knowledge of permafrost terrain characteristics, methods in acquisition of surficial and geotechnical material properties, field-based and remote sensing data acquisition, surficial geology and terrain mapping, and related data management, and analysis methods. You will disseminate information through developing scientific reports, and presentations to the public, planners, and technical audiences. You will have opportunities to build respectful and collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders including research partners, Indigenous Organizations, NWT residents, government representatives, and contractors.

Typically attained by.

A Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Geology, Geography, or related field, or a M.Sc. in Engineering with a specialization in geotechnical or geological sub-disciplines, with expertise in permafrost environments, and at least five (5) years of work experience in industry, academia, or a government agency in a related capacity, preferably conducting fieldwork related to surficial geology, geohazard and permafrost mapping.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Additional Requirements.

Eligibility for registration in Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG).
