The Homelessness & Housing Help Centre's primary goal is helping homeless people and those living on low income to find and keep appropriate housing and prevent evictions wherever possible. What You Will Do
Housing Access Responsibilities:

  • Support the Manager in the delivery of the unit's quality customer service mandate.
  • Lead team in supporting clients, families, and community partners, ensuring successful processing and access to Housing applications for independent living and support units.
  • Lead housing access workers in collaborating with referral agencies (PATH, Access Point, Coordinated Access and internal programs) to enable/facilitate housing access to applicants.
  • Coordinate intakes with staff, applicants and community partners to ensure completeness of applications and supporting documentation required.
  • Determine the eligibility of referrals, confirm housing to eligible applicants, notify ineligible applicants, and provide information around alternative programs.
  • Support the Manager in developing and maintaining ongoing communication with WCH Housing Unit, housing staff at building locations across WCH's portfolio to confirm applications are properly submitted and applicants are being contacted.
  • Support the Manager in developing and maintaining ongoing communication with external housing providers/partners, front line staff to confirm applications and intake processes are completed including providing feedback to applicants.
  • Assist the Manager in organizing team and unit meetings; and participate in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager.
  • Coach staff and participants to enhance their skills to access relevant resources and supports in order to ensure long-term tenancy.
  • Ensure Referral of applicants to translation services and other culturally appropriate services.
  • Monitor trends and report on data related to homelessness to Manager.
  • Prioritize vacant units to applicable waitlists on established guidelines and procedures.
  • Provide timely and accurate internal/external reporting including input to compliance reporting to Manager.
  • Ensure tenant record keeping and administrative procedures are effectively maintained.
  • Gather and document program statistics and narrative reports, identify program trends/issues.
  • Support staff to undertake training and professional development to improve service delivery.

Access System Management

  • Maintain WoodGreen access List for housing through the PATHS referral process, internal process, and other Affordable housing sources.
  • Review referrals files assuring applicants are income/program eligible for Affordable and Rent to Geared housing.
  • Evaluate potential applicants on program criteria policies and eligibility requirements and restrictions.
  • Work with Housing Unit to identify vacancies and fill all independent WoodGreen vacancies.
  • Interpret and apply program policies relative to access requirements.
  • Initiate and coordinate updates and purges to all applicant information to date.
  • Enter new applications and documenting access applications in the system of record.
  • Assist in the creation and development of policies, procedures & guidelines.
  • Prepare data entries related to access and client information, enable monthly, weekly/annual reporting to WoodGreen and funders.

Training & Development activities:

  • Familiarize with policies, documents and strategies with regards to emerging needs and issues in the community for those looking to access independent social housing.
  • Participate and attend community forums/town hall meetings on housing issues.
  • Plan and implement ongoing promotion/awareness building of WoodGreen and its services to the immediate and broader community.
  • Familiarize yourself with WoodGreen partnerships and requirements for housing with supports and Affordable housing partners.
  • Participate in internal team building activities and connect with key stakeholders to ensure an integrated customer service focused work culture.
  • Ensure the antiracism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor of Social Work or related undergraduate degree.
  • 2+ years of experience in social services supporting individuals who have history of street involvement and/or individuals with low income.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Understanding of the Residential Tenancies Act, the Housing Services Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
  • Experience working with women who may have experienced violence, addictions, abuse and /or homelessness.
  • Knowledge of issues faced by newcomers to Canada.
  • Knowledge of client centered, feminist, and anti-oppressive frame works.
  • Experience in crisis response and intervention, de-escalation, advocacy and negotiation skills. Comfortable in an environment where clients may be angry and exhibit anti-social behaviors.
  • Knowledge of community resources to support low-income individuals; individuals with a history of mental health or addictions; individuals with history of trauma.
  • Cultural competency with ability to communicate clearly with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds and levels of abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively or individually, to multi-task, organize and prioritize efficiently.
  • Strong interview, assessment, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Property management experience (lease administration, rent collection, unit turnover management).
