Job SummaryThe Planning and Design Engineer position is an exciting opportunity to be part of NAV CANADA's Deployment Services Planning and Design team. The team plays a pivotal role in overseeing the implementation of various technology deployments including communication, navigation, surveillance, and air traffic management systems crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of Canada's civil airspace.
As a Planning and Design Engineer reporting to a Deployment Manager, you will operate within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team environment. Your responsibilities will encompass formulating plans for capital projects, developing system / site designs and specifications to meet operational requirements, and procuring products / services necessary for implementing solutions. This role involves active engagement with stakeholders both within and outside the organization. Additionally, you will collaborate with a Senior Engineer for general and technical guidance for project planning and design activities.

Key Accountabilities:
- Contributes to NAV CANADA's overall technology deployment objectives by leveraging growing knowledge and experience in various air navigation services (ANS) electronic system deployments
- Performs site survey / selection, technical investigation / testing, feasibility study, as required to support system deployments.
- Collaborates with other NAV CANADA's Technology teams or equipment manufacturers to develop concepts and technical solutions, determine integration approach, and enhance performance / safety of systems.
- Identifies scope of work, gathers estimates, and produces documentation with system / site designs, requirements / specifications for professional services, etc. as required for on-site deployment while meeting NAV CANADA's operational, technical and safety requirements.
- Takes technical leadership in planning and executing projects of simple to medium complexity using NAV CANADA's project delivery methodology or assists Projects Manager / Senior Engineer with planning and executing large, complex projects.
- Coordinates and supports investigation of new or existing electronic systems which do not meet required operational, technical or safety performance requirements.
- Reviews third-party land use proposals near NAV CANADA's ANS systems / infrastructures and identifies mitigation ensuring the systems are not impacted.
- Adheres to NAV CANADA's Safety and Quality culture when delivering products / documents to clients.
Job Requirements
Education:
- Graduation with a minimum of Bachelor Degree in Engineering from a recognized university, or certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
- Professional Certification: Member or eligible to be a member in a Professional Engineering Association in Canada.
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience in the planning, design, and integration of electronic / engineering systems (such as computer systems, radio freq, network / telecom, infrastructure, power, etc.).
- Experience in engineering project management is an asset.
- Experience in requirements gathering and performing site survey / selection is an asset.
- Experience in ANS system deployment (such as communication, navigation, surveillance, and air traffic management ) is an asset.
Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of engineering theories and principles.
- Knowledge of systems and equipment of various engineering disciplines.
- General knowledge of ANS systems / equipment and air navigation concepts.
- General knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
- Knowledge of NAV CANADA's organization, business practices and principles.
Abilities:
- Ability to apply knowledge and experience to develop technical solutions, designs and plans.
- Ability to produce documents outlining site selections, investigations, feasibility studies and design / deployment of systems.
- Ability to identify problem areas, analyze data, devise, and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to multi-task while staying organized to meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Working conditions:
- This position is based at Ottawa (NAV CANADA Technical Systems Centre at Hunt Club Road).
- This position will require on site office work with the possibility of flexible work arrangement in accordance with NAV CANADA's Flex Work Policy.
- This position requires occasional travel across Canada.
