DESCRIPTION

Come join a team of operational wildfire researchers and make a difference delivering practical solutions for living well with wildfire. Our wildfire operations research program applies sound scientific methods to create impacts for wildfire agencies along the research themes of mitigation and prevention, wildfire response, post-fire response and recovery and national wildfire data collection. We are looking for a team player that has a keen aptitude for learning and an interest in applying their passion for research.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develop and execute on research plans specific to wildfire operations
  2. Deploy to field locations, active wildfires, and experimental burns to conduct research
  3. Assist other team members in data collection, processing and analysis
  4. Document and transfer technology and knowledge related to your work through technical reports, workshops and presentations
  5. Foster and maintain professional relationships with members of the wildfire community (wildfire agencies, academia, product vendors)
  6. Supervise and guide contractors while they are assisting on projects
  7. Be a trusted collaborator in safety matters; adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, preference may be given to an advance degree or one that is forestry related
  • Previous research experience in forestry, environmental science, wildfire or emergency management domains
  • Fluency in French and English (spoken and written)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous wildfire operations experience
  • An in-depth understanding of forest fuels, fuel treatments and their relation to fire behaviour
  • A working knowledge of data collection practices and data processing interfaces (hardware and software)
SKILLS
  • Ability to apply scientific methods to address complex research questions
  • Advanced technical writing skills
  • Ability to coordinate all aspects of project delivery with limited supervision and direction
  • Agility – Being responsive to emerging wildfire research opportunities in a constantly evolving environment
  • Willingness to travel throughout Canada and work in the field, often in remote locations, up to 20% of the year
  • Have a valid driver's license
