Weather Network Specialist

$67,728.87 - $77,012.22 annually $36.53 bi-weekly isolation allowance for Smithers

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The Predictive Services Unit (PSU) is a multidisciplinary team within Wildfire Operations. The team consists of fire behaviour, fire weather and technology specialists who develop innovative products and services that can be utilized by other teams for their programs as well as during emergency operations.

The Weather Network Specialist is operationally focused and provides technical expertise to support Fire Centre operations and the weather data services delivered by the Predictive Services Unit. This position supports the Senior Technologist on a variety of wildfire risk functions specific to weather network infrastructure and technology projects, weather data analysis and interpretation and associated risk reporting utilized by Fire Centres and the other BCWS programs. Qualifications for this role include:

  • Post secondary education in the forestry, resource management, electronics, or relevant field such as computer science with related experience with the following:
  • Industry grade electronics and control systems, or
  • Electronics instrumentation, such as data collection networks, or
  • Experience with environmental data acquisition, collection, and analysis applications
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing automated monitoring equipment.
  • Experience performing technical duties and working with field deployed monitoring equipment (example: data loggers, various types of climate monitoring equipment and sensors).
  • Experience in analyzing, interpreting, and managing complex datasets.
  • Experience working in a comparable or similar capacity, outdoors, in an alpine environment, in harsh conditions;
  • Capable of maintaining adequate fitness levels to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs, climb heights up to 20'/6m for extended periods and navigate a variety of terrains and climate conditions.
  • Capable of achieving Rope Rescue certification and Fall Risk training requirements. This position is required to work at heights.
  • High level of mechanical aptitude and dexterity working with hand, power tools, and disassembly of equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence; required to operate 4x4 vehicles on rough terrain.
