Position Rationale:

Reporting to the Foreman, the Mainline Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a mainline excavator. A Mainline Excavator Operator will perform duties as assigned to ensure that completed work is delivered according to Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd.'s company policies and procedures, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, and contract specifications. This position utilizes an excavator to dig trenches and crane material for various types of underground utilities.

Position Accountabilities:
Operate an excavator and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
Ensure trenches are excavated safely to the proper depth/grade.
Responsible for placement of pipe and structures within the excavation. Understand proper rigging/hoisting and ensuring safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.

Technical Knowledge:
Knowledge of excavator operation and other heavy equipment.
Knowledge of underground utility construction materials, utility construction processes and industry requirements.
Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.
Understanding of DEF systems and operation standards.

Working Environment/Conditions:
Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat, and humidity.
Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 20 LBS on a regular basis. (example: cleaning tracks of equipment). ,
Must comply with the Company's drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Possible out of town and weekend work as required.

Qualifications & Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D is preferred.
Class 5 Driver's License with a clean Driver's Abstract (as per Company policy), is preferred.
Preferred minimum 2 - 3 years of experience within the underground utility construction industry.
Minimum 2 - 3 years of experience operating an excavator is required.
Knowledge of underground industry standards, and OH&S requirements.
