Position Summary:

Reporting to the Clinical Director, the primary role of the Clinical Educator in Perioperative Services is to support the delivery of high quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing practice for Operating Room, Post Anesthetic Care Unit, Same Day Surgery, and Preoperative Clinic.

Primary Responsibilities:

Collaborate for onboarding and orientation planning of new staff.
Assists with policy and procedure development/revisions when standards of care change to facilitate evidence-based practice.
Collaborates with Leadership regarding skills assessment as support to Development Plans
Assists in the prioritization of the learning needs of Unit staff
Elevates the profile of nursing and establishes a communication strategy for nursing to inform all stakeholders of related nursing activities
Ensures that regulatory changes, issues and initiatives that impact professional nursing practice are identified, discussed and directed appropriately for follow-up through the program
Recommendations on professional training, education and research, quality improvement, professional advocacy, professional standards and regulatory requirements.
Presentation or coordination of yearly review required specific to Perioperative services.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required; a Master's Degree in Nursing or Education is preferred and considered an asset
Previous experience as a Nurse Clinician or Nurse Educator is a strongly preferred
Evidence of strong clinical skills, minimum of five (5) years of acute care nursing experience
Minimum of 2 years' nursing experience in the Operating Room
Minimum of 2 years' experience in PACU, Surgical or Critical Care Nursing
Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Leadership and Management certification training an asset
Affiliated with a professional body, such as ORNAC or OPANA
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate
Current PALS certificate
Evidence of Perioperative Operating Course required
PeriAnesthesia course required, or agreement for completion within 3 months of hire.
Demonstrated ongoing educational and professional development
Demonstrated leadership, teaching and presentation skills
Ability to contract learning experiences with nurses and develop learning objectives
Strong knowledge base related to adult learning principles
Demonstrated critical thinking skills
Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate programs to meet nursing staff's educational and professional needs.
Ability to create education documents and materials using Powerpoint, Word or other IT platforms

Educational Requirements & Responsibilities:

Provides nursing in-service and continuing education for employees in Perioperative Setting
Plans, implement and evaluate specific educational programs to meet the identified nursing needs
Assists in the development of patient teaching programs
Conducts education needs assessments for targeted education strategies and programs

Quality Lead Responsibilities:

Continually upgrades expertise by attending seminars, workshops, conferences, community committee meetings and educational courses.
Remains up to date with nursing best practice guidelines and evidence-based practices related to the program, recommended ORNAC, OPANA, IPAC and other professional bodies.
Participation and collaboration for education associated with Quality Metrics associated to OR/PACU/SDS and Preoperative clinic
Collaborates in the review and creation of Order sets
Attends Program Quality Council
Participates as a member or ad hoc for unit councils to support patient and staff education.
