Position Summary

As a Snow Removal Loader Operator, you'll play a key role in keeping our large commercial properties safe, accessible, and operational throughout Ottawa's winter weather.

You'll operate large wheel loaders, including Caterpillar and similar heavy equipment, equipped with various snow-removal attachments such as snow pushers, buckets, blades, and other attachments as required.

Operators remain at their assigned property during the shift and work alongside multiple pieces of equipment and snow-removal crews. A Crew Leader or Supervisor will provide site priorities and direction, but operators are expected to work independently, efficiently, and confidently within the overall snow operation.

You'll be responsible for pushing, piling, stacking, relocating, and loading snow while protecting client property and maintaining safe access throughout the site.

When a snow event is forecast, shifts are posted through our mobile app, where operators confirm their availability and receive site information and work assignments.

This is a direct-to-site position. Operators must have reliable transportation to their assigned property in Ottawa Central, Nepean, or Barrhaven, at any time of the day or night.

This is a position for experienced heavy-equipment operators. Our crews rely on you to move large volumes of snow safely, efficiently, and without unnecessary damage to equipment or client property.

Major Responsibilities

• Safely operate large wheel loaders and heavy snow-removal equipment
• Operate equipment with snow pushers, buckets, blades, and other approved attachments
• Clear snow from parking lots, drive lanes, loading areas, access roads, building entrances, fire routes, and other designated areas
• Push, pile, relocate, stack, and manage large volumes of snow
• Load snow into dump trucks during snow-hauling operations
• Work alongside multiple loaders, trucks, sidewalk equipment, and crew members on active commercial sites
• Follow site maps, snow plans, assigned routes, and Crew Leader/Supervisor instructions
• Maintain safe and appropriate snow piles while protecting:
  • Sightlines
  • Fire routes
  • Fire hydrants
  • Building entrances
  • Accessibility areas
  • Catch basins and drainage areas
  • Drive lanes and pedestrian access
• Complete assigned areas efficiently and within required timelines
• Perform required pre-shift, during-shift, and post-shift equipment inspections
• Check fluids, tires, attachments, lights, warning systems, and other equipment components
• Fuel equipment as required
• Perform basic operator-level maintenance, including greasing, clearing snow or ice buildup, and other assigned maintenance tasks
• Immediately report any mechanical issues, leaks, warning lights, unusual noises, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions
• Maintain communication with the Crew Leader or Supervisor throughout the shift
• Use the company mobile app to confirm shifts, receive assignments, and follow operational instructions
• Follow all Strathmore health, safety, quality, and equipment operating procedures

Protecting Equipment & Client Property

Operating heavy equipment on active commercial properties requires a high level of care and awareness.

Operators are expected to maintain control of their equipment at all times and use extreme caution around:

• Parked and moving vehicles
• Pedestrians
• Buildings and loading docks
• Light poles
• Curbs and islands
• Bollards
• Signs
• Fire hydrants
• Landscaping
• Fences and barriers
• Other snow-removal equipment

All accidents, property damage, equipment damage, near misses, and safety concerns must be reported immediately.

Careless operation or preventable property damage is taken seriously.

What You Need to Be Successful

• Minimum 2 years of previous loader operating experience is mandatory
• Previous experience operating loaders specifically for commercial snow removal is required
• Experience operating large wheel loaders such as Caterpillar or similar heavy equipment
• Comfortable using multiple snow-removal attachments, including pushers, buckets, and blades
• Ability to safely push, stack, relocate, and load snow
• Experience working around multiple pieces of heavy equipment on an active site
• Strong knowledge of safe heavy-equipment operation and snow-management practices
• Excellent spatial awareness and ability to operate safely in tight spaces and around obstacles
• Ability to work independently while following instructions from a Crew Leader or Supervisor
• Ability to understand and follow site maps, snow plans, routes, and operating instructions
• Valid driver's licence required
• Heavy-equipment or related safety certifications are preferred
• Must have reliable transportation directly to the assigned work site
• 24/7 availability during snow events is required, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Reliable and punctual - once a snow shift is confirmed, operators are expected to report to their assigned site on time
• Comfortable working during heavy snowfall, icy conditions, extreme cold, and reduced visibility
• Must be prepared for shifts of up to 12 hours, depending on snowfall and operational requirements
• Good-quality winter boots are mandatory

Operator Assessment

Because previous experience is mandatory for this position, qualified candidates may be required to complete a practical equipment assessment before being approved for the role.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

• Safe equipment operation
• Good control and awareness
• Proper use of loader attachments
• Snow pushing and stacking techniques
• Ability to maneuver around obstacles
• Safe loading techniques
• Good judgment when operating on commercial properties

Availability

This position requires 24/7 availability during snow events.

Snow operations may begin at any time, including overnight, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

A limited number of guaranteed-hours positions are available for experienced operators who maintain full winter availability.

Because loaders are essential to completing our commercial sites, reliability is critical. Once a shift is confirmed, your team is depending on you and your machine to be there.
